Are we all equal on FR?

Posted on 05/27/2005 8:31:06 AM PDT by JoeV1

I wonder if the rules on this forum are applied equally? Several weeks ago I was denied posting privileges because I jokingly advocated a "plan b" in fighting the so far failed war on illegal immigration. My "plan b" was to have border guards retreat to within 200 yards of the border and while fitted with night vision goggles simply drop any illegals attempting to gain access to America.

Now frankly I am not concerned with the fact I was denied posting privileges for a day(reason given was "advocating violence")but I wonder if the folks who post pictures of exploding nukes over text that calls for turning the middle east, or N Korea into a glowing heap of slag. were also denied the ability to post. I did a cursory check and found the names of the posters associated with the nuke threats posting regularly after the aforementioned posts appeared.

Is it possible that some are more equal then others here? I have been referred to as a "newbie" as if that somehow makes what I say less credible then someone here a longer period of time. I believe opinions are opinions and the length of forum membership does not serve to make ones credibility stronger.

It does seem that there is a "good old boy's" network operating here and the old timers are given more leeway as far as the rules then are the newer arrivals. While I have been a FR member for only 8 months I have been an avid political forum debator for 8 or 9 years on places such as the NYT, WP, LAT and others.

There was another incident in which I was accused of a personal attack although I was merely responding to an attack on myself. I never used profanity and merely responded in kind to another whose main complaint was that I was wrong in criticizing the post of another person because that person was a 5 year member. I was also told I didn't know what I was talking about. This resulted in a few back and forth retorts which I frankly found amusing and in no way took as an insult.

I thoroughly enjoy verbal jousting and never shrink from a confrontation. It appears that others see fit to run to the moderator at the first sign of getting back what it is they dish out. It is at that time that I believe the good old boys network comes into play.

If any of you would like to see the posts that caused this simply ask and I will happily post them.

I think sometimes they too soon zot things that are serious questions. Great opportunities for reasoned, thoughtful debate.

The zot phenomena is a whole other story. While I wouldn't call it childish, I often get an image of a bunch of 13 year olds who can't wait to post pictures of their cat and lightning or their cat getting struck by lightning.

It's a bit tired.

No, actually, it means that the Republican party never misses a chance to unilaterally and unconditionally surrender.

I'm not sure where you are finding all these obscene sexual threads but whatever.

The new pictures can be cute.

There ought to be a law that you cannot post the same zotpic twice.

Not to mention that your comments were patently racist. And I am no "friend of open borders".

Doesn't that kind of make you a "whiner"?

Sounds more like a responsible FReeper to me. Those threads way back when, the ones where some FReepers were giving the green light to 18 year olds digitized to look like prepubescent children... I stayed away from the forum entirely for over a year after that. Made my stomach turn. I don't think there is anything "left" about not wanting to associate with that kind of rhetoric.

Doesn't that just bite! We finally get to be the majority and then it doesn't seem to mean a thing.

The glee people take in banning people is pretty pathetic.

I noticed one newbie posted some goofy article about arafat not too long ago. Thread pulled with 'no thanks' and he was banned.

Couple hours later, someone with some clout I guess posted the same thing. Everyone laughed about it and thought it was an amusing article.

It has been amazing watching the Republicans deftly pull defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Special interests and lobbyists make laws.

Propose, advocate, yes...unless someone went and rewrote the Constitution, however, it is still the job of the legislature to put pen to paper.

I've actually gone and defended a newbie or two who wasn't a troll, but just didn't know forum etiquette (like don't sign up and post an inane opinion as a thread the very first day).

Not a whole thread just comments thrown into an existing thread.

Never seen a really disgusting thread. I avoid all the hurt animal threads, gross cruelty threads as I can't bear hearing about them.

Don't get me wrong, I seldom hit the abuse button. But, any can use it as a flag for supervision if needed.

"I private messaged him with my righteous indignation and he told me "the way things really are"."

Listen up. I said in a previous post in this thread that I tried TWICE to private message a mod and or Robinson. I received no reply.

I am sorry you did not take the time to read the entire original post in which I specifically said I was not complaining but merely posing a question.

You are right and they are what we read to see. We don't come here to read ZDSXXXD, LLISHDNL, sexual activity jokes, homo activity jokes and general bathroom/gym talk.

I agree, but to be honest, I don't see a whole lot of this.

Maybe a few off-color jokes here and there, but hey, people work hard and want to be gofy sometimes.

Unless they just go over the edge, maybe cut them some slack.

Personally, I have never, ever hit the abuse button. And i've been here since 1998 (albeit a differen name them).

I've seen some things that make me outright wince, but I just click over to another thread when that happens. If everyone else did the same, it would drop off the front page in about 30 seconds with the volume this site gets.

I've also been called some really nasty names, including some really mean ones aimed at my name. I replied to that person in a less than kind way (never profanities), and that peson hit the 'abuse' button on me. The mods rebuked ME without having read the thread where they would have clearly noticed I was the butt of a "racial-type" of attack and was merely defending myself.

That is why I think the "abuse" button should be transparent. Sometimes the abusers are the ones that hit it, and it least in my case, the mods DID NOT check the context of the supposed abuse.

It's just too easy to "win" an arguement by hitting that button, and I think more judisicious use would be made ofit were it transparent.
