Are we all equal on FR?

Posted on 05/27/2005 8:31:06 AM PDT by JoeV1

I wonder if the rules on this forum are applied equally? Several weeks ago I was denied posting privileges because I jokingly advocated a "plan b" in fighting the so far failed war on illegal immigration. My "plan b" was to have border guards retreat to within 200 yards of the border and while fitted with night vision goggles simply drop any illegals attempting to gain access to America.

Now frankly I am not concerned with the fact I was denied posting privileges for a day(reason given was "advocating violence")but I wonder if the folks who post pictures of exploding nukes over text that calls for turning the middle east, or N Korea into a glowing heap of slag. were also denied the ability to post. I did a cursory check and found the names of the posters associated with the nuke threats posting regularly after the aforementioned posts appeared.

Is it possible that some are more equal then others here? I have been referred to as a "newbie" as if that somehow makes what I say less credible then someone here a longer period of time. I believe opinions are opinions and the length of forum membership does not serve to make ones credibility stronger.

It does seem that there is a "good old boy's" network operating here and the old timers are given more leeway as far as the rules then are the newer arrivals. While I have been a FR member for only 8 months I have been an avid political forum debator for 8 or 9 years on places such as the NYT, WP, LAT and others.

There was another incident in which I was accused of a personal attack although I was merely responding to an attack on myself. I never used profanity and merely responded in kind to another whose main complaint was that I was wrong in criticizing the post of another person because that person was a 5 year member. I was also told I didn't know what I was talking about. This resulted in a few back and forth retorts which I frankly found amusing and in no way took as an insult.

I thoroughly enjoy verbal jousting and never shrink from a confrontation. It appears that others see fit to run to the moderator at the first sign of getting back what it is they dish out. It is at that time that I believe the good old boys network comes into play.

If any of you would like to see the posts that caused this simply ask and I will happily post them.

Don't worry about. IF what you believe is true FR will become a minor circle of individuals who only agree with themselves and become a place that has no consequence in the marketplace of ideas.
There still have an obligation to ensure that there is a basic level of civility. It is true that those who have been here longer tend to whine to the admin moderator, I am sure they see it as keeping the level of discussion mature, and others see as they live in a glass house.
At the end of the day it only a website.

I merely asked the question. I realize the owner of the forum can do as he wishes. I wondered if it was fair.

Are all FReepers equal?

No, some of them are idiots.

The Rules on FR may not be failrly enforced

Rules are enforced as those in charge at the behest of the owner decide. Fairness has nothing to do with it. For example, if you have guests in your house and some of them are lifelong friends while others are only recent acquaintances, you might let a long time friend get away with teasing and joking with your sister (a privilege earned by virtue of lenghty friendship) in ways that you would not tolerate of a recent acquaintance. And while a moose might get away with biting your sister, you would certainly kick a newbie out of your house if he tried it.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to focus on those who enable illegal immigration, such as employers, an apathetic federal government, activists and an understaffed and mis-directed border guard?

Instead, you wish to impose a death penalty on people who simply wish to feed their families, and only do so because everyone north of the border is giving them the green light.

You are a newbie. And you are probably not aware that there are several white supremicist groups that wish to discredit the Free Republic. There are also leftists who wish to discredit this site by posing as white supemicists.

Your "idea" smacks of white supremicism. I applaud the mods for removing your stupid idea. And you should be thankful that you only got a suspension instead of an outright ban.

Some of you here take yourselves far, far to seriously and think nothing of passing judgment at the drop of a hat (or thread).

As opposed to what you're doing?

That doesn't answer the question about the nuke advocates.

Because there's a difference between hyperbole (who actually thinks we'd nuke ANYTHING) and something that's a very real possibility.

"I wondered if it was fair."

As with life and private enterprise, it should be obvious what conclusion may be drawn. I would say:

No. FR is not fair. I'm glad it is not, to boot.

"Please identify any of these posters with access to nuclear weapons, and we'll immediately suspend them."

Oh, NOW I get it!! I advocated violence by the use of a rifle which is available to most people and that was a violation. However, had I advocated violence via a weapon only accessible to the military, such as a plasma weapon of some kind, then I wouldn't be in violation. Is that the way it works? Thank you for clearing that up.

Well, you have a point. Once I, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, suggested placing claymores.

But, it's not my playroom. I just hope to get a warning before a ban if it ever comes my way.
