What 'John Kerry reporting for duty' really means is after his staff is finished going through it he will show us a copy of Form SF 180.

Maybe he figures when his record is made public, he'll be more popular than ever with the liberals. Or he has been guaranteed that the worse records have been destroyed. Or some of the records are going to become public soon anyway through other means.

Perhaps he did get a change in his status from general to honorable discharge. His petition for a change may also be in records that are not sealed by the military. Perhaps, these records may be in someone's memoirs that are soon to be published or something. Otherwise, this doesn't make sense to sign the form now.

So according to his own records - and simple arithmetic - he served about 15 months on a minesweeper, which spent about three months of that time in Vietnamese waters:

Then he spent just under a year in Vietnam proper on Swift Boats - about 3.5 months in Cos. Div. 13 and 8 months in Cos. Div. 11. (also check out the history link at www.swiftboats.net).

That makes a grand total of about 15 months of service in or off the coast of Vietnam.

But a quick Google search shows that in 1971 he repeatedly claimed to have been "in Vietnam" nearly THREE YEARS:
