Lots of buzzing over Howard Dean's telling slip o' the tongue on Meet the Press yesterday in which he confused Saddam and Osama (video via Jackson's Junction; transcript at MSNBC):
But the thing that really bothered me the most, which the 9-11 Commission said also wasn't true, is the insinuation that the president continues to make to this day that Osama bin Laden had something to do with supporting terrorists that attacked the United States. That is false. The 9-11 Commission, chaired by a Republican, said it was false."
Whaaaa?
Dean repeated the mistake again:
And the truth was Osama bin Laden was a very bad person who was doing terrible things, but that Iraq was never a threat to the United States. That was the truth.
Whoops. Looks like Dr. Dean can't keep his crackpot attacks straight. Recall that in December 2003, he waded into the far-left swamps to float the theory that Bush knew in advance about the Sept. 11 attacks--leading Charles Krauthammer to diagnose Dean with Bush Derangement Syndrome.hreat to the United States. That was the truth.

A dissertation is supposed to represent an original contribution to knowledge...some do, some don't.
If you want to call yourself "doctor" and find writing a dissertation intimidating, there are two options: get a D.A. (Doctor of Arts) degree, which doesn't require a dissertation, or get an Ed.D. (Doctor of Education) degree, which typically involves sending out a questionnaire to a bunch of people with some inane question, then analyzing the meaning of the responses (of the 25-30% who bother to send back the questionnaire).
Remember, "Knowledge is Good" (attributed to the founder of Faber College, setting for Animal House).

I'm not a doctor... but I'd give him one.

I haven't seen the transcripts but let's face it. Dean is a fool. Always has and always will be. He was placed as the head of the Dem Party so they can ruin him and get him out of politics. He will be a fading memory next year. The big talk is about how the Dems have only raised 1/2 as much money as the GOP with him steering the ship. The truth is the money isn't in the parties but the 527's. The Dems will continue to show less money because all the soft stuff is going to Moveon.org and the other phony political action groups which are really Dem controlled fund raising tools. Thank you Senator McCain! For taking campaign donations and making them even harder to track. I will enjoy watching Dean continue his demise over the next year.

Yup. Most M.D.'s don't make original contributions any more. There are also Psy.D.'s (purely clinical psychology degrees).
No need to lecture on the point of a dissertation--our household has put out two so far, mine in mathematics, and my wife's in psychology, and I expect my daughter to follow with one in philosophy in a few years. "Doctor" was originally our title in academe, and denoted as you point out one who had extended human knowledge (even a tiny bit, as is often the case any more in all disciplines). Another reason I despise the NYT beyond their left-wing editorial stance, and disingenuous insertion of their editorial positions into their news articles, is their reservation of the title 'Doctor' to M.D.'s most of whom any more aren't worthy of the title any more.

I think Rush likes to go on Russert's show to show the people who do not normally listen to him that he is not the monster he is made out to be. Russert has apparently asked to be Rush's replacement on the radio when Rush is out. I don't think this has ever happened, and cannot imagine the beating Russert would take if he tried to helm the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies.
I also wonder how Tony Snow has credibility as a "regular" journalist when he is so conservative on his own radio show or when he subs for Rush.

Dean went on to say that Bernie Sanders is not a Socialist no matter how much Sanders says that he is. Dean justified this by pointing out that Sanders votes with the Domocrat 98% of the tiem. Maybe that means that the Democrats are Socialists How.
