Apple Recalls more G4 Batteries
Apple Computer is recalling 128,000 batteries that were shipped in its PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 laptops over the past eight months, marking the second time since last summer that it has issued such a warning.
In a report filed with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company said that it has identified a new crop of batteries that may have the potential to overheat. Apple will replace all of the batteries in question, which were shipped in 12- and 15-inch models of the PowerBook G4 and 12-inch versions of the iBook G4 delivered between October 2004 and May 2005.
Apple said it has received six reports worldwide of batteries overheating, including two instances in the United States. According to the reports filed by Apple with the government's consumer watchdog group, the batteries involved in the recall were manufactured by LG Chem of South Korea, the same supplier involved in its earlier consumer warning. In both cases the computer maker said that an internal short in the batteries could cause their cells to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Company representatives didn't immediately return calls seeking comment on the new recall.

I know lots of Apple people get stoned.. Now we learn they get fried as well.
ping... my ibook gets a little warm but my Dell laptop battery pack would get really hot, a little too hot for my comfort level so I would unplug it.
My laptop charger serves double-duty as a hotplate. Suitable for frying eggs or heating coffee.
You'd think designers would figure out a way to stop that.
Actually, some heat is expected. The real question is whether it's dissipated sufficently (and quickly) enough to prevent components from catching fire. I'm less concerned about the battery charger -- since it's a separate unit, well-ventilated, and not located in close proximity to anything of value. But batteries are integrated directly into the laptop case -- which makes heat dissipation a LOT more difficult.
Just the way my cell phone heats up when I talk for more than a few minutes is enough to give one pause in the though of sitting on 2000lbs of mobile rechargeable power packs. ;)
Only those with more short-sighted liberal dogma than brains would.
What the hell is wrong with using the tested Valence corp's phospho-lithium battery?
Don't forget that Dell still has ongoing issues with the same problem - the Inspirons aren't called On-fire-ons for nothing.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
The battery for my Mac was recalled a few months ago. I filled out an online form, and got the new battery within 24 hours (halfway across the country from California).
So while their choice in battery suppliers may be iffy, their customer service is not.
Looks like Kitty ZOTTED that place pretty darn good. ;-)
