Historical perspective
The filibuster has been used historically by the minority party, which can't win with a vote count. Democrats have opposed the filibuster before in the 1960s, they accused Republicans of using it to block civil rights legislation.
"According to the Senate Historical Office, the record for the longest individual speech is held by the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. To keep the floor, he read some of his wife's recipes and passages from novels out loud."
ABC News' Ed O'Keefe contributed to this report.
What else is new? Blame game all around. Losers all.
I wrote to them and told them of their error. I got a note back saying they would forward it to the appropriate department. When I checked the story later, the error was gone.
Interesting.
Wow, that's pretty harsh criticism. This was probably my third or fourth post in the past 7 years of being on FR. I thought is was fairly interesting. It seemed to get decent response. Yet, to you, it was "poorly written" and not "thought through".
Oh great God of posts, please grace us with your sage advice on the criteria for an 'excellent' post??
Wasn't Tower the 4 foot tall weasel that was caught running around with prostitutes? Oh my!
I'm an Angleton grad. Not too far from BHS.
Oh.. I get it now.. You're from Alabama. And, I'm a Texas grad. The only school "Bama had NEVER beaten. HAH! What a sore loser.
Don't know of any prostitutes but he was a short son of a gun. One of his sayings was when he introduced himself was "My name is John Tower but I don't".
He was the foundation the Republican party of Texas was built upon.
BTW, Angleton/Brazoria County is a great area not to mention one of the most conservative spots in Texas.
Yup, home district to "Dr. No", aka, Dr. Ron Paul. We knew he would NOT "bring home the bacon", but we elected him anyway.
I knew him well. Went to school with his son. His business partner delivered both of my children. And, I actually worked on his failed Libertarian Presidential campagign in 1984. That was back in my "Loser-tarian" days. Now, I prefer to move our agenda in the Republican Party, where we can actual WIN and advance a conservative agenda.
ABC is correct. The Republicans are wresting the American Government away from the leftist who have run the country into the ground with extremist action.
ABC is dead wrong on this one. AL Gore SR. was one of the Democrat who worked fervently to block Civil Rights Legislation.
With the Newsweak story, the press has really gone over the deep end and declared themselves to be partisan. They don't even try to hide it anymore. [Which is actually good for Republicans]
He is the most dangerous man in the world. The Media embraces that piece of slime. I have followed his trail of debris for years. He is nothing but a power hungry self driven Communist using the system to further his cause.
I don't doubt you. But, I do doubt the MSM. I would like to have more details.
Who in the Pentagon is responsible for reviewing articles and reports scheduled for release by the media? Is it possible that this claim is an attempt to shift blame and responsibility?
I don't know.
Implausible as it may seem, the excuse I read was that the Pentagon had no more suspicion that the street Arabs would go over-the-top nuts than Newsweak did.
A fact that goes totally unnoticed by today's media. I lived in the South during those bygone days, and I assure you it was a party thing. We were a military family and found ourselves in Mississippi at the height of race tensions.
The Democrat party sent thugs to our house, and throughout the neighborhoods, threatening people if they didn't vote Democrat. It spread legions of fear amongst people who had no desire to support racism. There was no doubt left in anyones mind that the KKK would be back to 'fix things' if their candidate went down to defeat. Not so subtle.
