Historical perspective
The filibuster has been used historically by the minority party, which can't win with a vote count. Democrats have opposed the filibuster before in the 1960s, they accused Republicans of using it to block civil rights legislation.
"According to the Senate Historical Office, the record for the longest individual speech is held by the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. To keep the floor, he read some of his wife's recipes and passages from novels out loud."
ABC News' Ed O'Keefe contributed to this report.
John F Kennedy voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957
To the liberals, truth is what you say, not what you do.
The media has reached solid bottom and has started to dig.
Tim, these people are cowardly communist liars. Why would you expect them to tell the truth?
So, ABC simply "forgot" the days when Strom Thurmond was a major figure in the Democratic party ~ the MAJORITY party that held African-Americans in virtual peonage.
Yep.. and DEMOCRAT (at the time) Strom Thurmond holds the records for the longest filibuster.. against Civil Rights legislation.
Strom Thurmond was 'rat until late 1964.

Strom Thurmond was a democrat until 1964.
Did Thurmond vote for or against the CRA?
As far as I know Republicans aren't going to outlaw the filibuster anyway. This is only going to effect the ability for judges to get up or down votes. Senators can still filibuster if they need to on all the things he mentioned.
Now they are the minority party which holds African-Americans in virtual peonage.
Yep, Thurmond was a DEMOCRAT.
You got it! Talk is precious, action is cheap.
Vergy good ~ that's exactly what I meant!
Yup, the Dems are the kings of the filibuster--used by that party extensively to block civil rights legislation. I was only Republican votes that made the passing of the 1960s Civil Rights legisaltion possible.
Democrat (until 1964) Strom Thurmond, William Fulbright (Clinton's mentor), Robert KKK Byrd, and Al Gore, Sr. (the ex-VPs dad) were all stars of the filibuster.
Also, why didn't these f*cking losers inform us that Al Gore's daddy and Robert Byrd were prime players in blocking the civil rights act? One or both even tried to block Thurgood Marshall.

I know.. Pay attention to news reports. How many ACCURATELY report that this "BAN ON FILIBUSTERS" will ONLY apply to Judicial nominees... as the threshold for votes on these is SPECIFIED IN THE CONSTITUTION at 51. Sorry, but that trumps Senate Rules.
