Historical perspective
The filibuster has been used historically by the minority party, which can't win with a vote count. Democrats have opposed the filibuster before in the 1960s, they accused Republicans of using it to block civil rights legislation.
"According to the Senate Historical Office, the record for the longest individual speech is held by the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. To keep the floor, he read some of his wife's recipes and passages from novels out loud."
ABC News' Ed O'Keefe contributed to this report.
Except Thurmond didnt become a republican till 64.
Omigawsh. Talk about re-writing history!
ABC News is right up there with MTV News in terms of accurate & useable information.
Hey, don't confuse them with the facts!
That's their story and their sticking with it.
Just demonstrates anew that the truth means nothing to the main stream media.
The bad thing is that a large segment of the population of the United States will believe it.
Why? Because so-and-so on the evening nesw said it. He is smart. So if he says it, it must be true.
If I remember correctly, Robert Byrd (D W.Va.) is the only sitting senator to have:
1) Filibustered against the Civil Rights Act
2) Voted against the confirmation of both Thurgood Marshal and Clarence Thomas, and
3) Is an ex-Kleagle (recruiter) of the Ku Klux Klan

ABCNEWS POLITICAL DIRECTOR MEMO SPARKS CONTROVERSY: BOTH SIDES NOT 'EQUALLY ACCOUNTABLE'
**Exclusive**
An internal memo written by ABCNEWS Political Director Mark Halperin admonishes ABC staff: During coverage of Democrat Kerry and Republican Bush not to "reflexively and artificially hold both sides 'equally' accountable."
The controversial internal memo obtained by DRUDGE, captures Halperin stating how "Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win."
But Halperin claims that Bush is hoping to "win the election by destroying Senator Kerry at least partly through distortions."
"The current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done," Halperin writes.
Halperin's claim that ABCNEWS will not "reflexively and artificially hold both sides 'equally' accountable" set off sparks in St. Louis where media players gathered to cover the second presidential debate.
Halperin states the responsibilities of the ABCNEWS staff have "become quite grave."
In August, Halperin declared online: "This is now John Kerry's contest to lose."
The ABC's of Media Bias (Halperin's father associated with Soros)

The Southampton Meeting
To the extent that the Shadow Party can be said to have an official launch date, July 17, 2003 probably fits the bill.[10] On that day, a team of political strategists, wealthy donors, leftwing labor leaders and other Democrat activists gathered at Soros Southampton beach house on Long Island. Aside from Soros, the most noteworthy attendee was Morton H. Halperin. Soros had hired Halperin in February 2002, to head the Washington office of his tax-exempt Open Society Institute part of Soros global network of Open Society institutes and foundations located in more than 50 countries around the world. Given Halperins history, the appointment revealed much about Soros political goals.

The media apparently doesn't care any more if they are lying or not. I guess since we're gonna catch them lying anyway, they might as well just go from little lies to whoppers.
George Wallace was a Republican right? And Klansman Byrd, he is a -- never mind.
So JFK voted against it before he voted for it. Sounds familiar.
They've already pierced the septic tank and are going back for more.
They should go back to the old days of the filibuster. The filibuster was intended to keep debate open on a subject by talking until 60 senators agreed to end the debate. Until the debate was closed, no other action was allowed. This meant the filibuster was only used on matters that the members considered to be of grave national interest. Right now they allow 40 senators to block anything they want without any consequence.
Soros seems to be doing everything in his power to run this country with a little help from ABC and the rest of the LYING MSM.
The Filibuster has a traditional place in our Congressional
debates. But the TRADITIONAL Filibuster is NOT what is
being used today. They have watered it down to a format
wherein a Congressman simply states, "I'm filibustering
this vote!" Then he SITS DOWN AND SHUTS HIS MOUTH! That's
NOT what is supposed to happen! If Harry Reid, JFKerry, Teddy Kennedy, Sheets Byrd, or even Hillary or Chuckles Schumer intend to filibuster, they better damn well stand up, start spouting their nonsensical dribble and filibuster...not just say, "I invoke a filibuster!" And
a filibuster CANNOT be a two/three man operation. It is
a declaration by ONE individual that he intends to speak until he drops if need be in attempting to win over
opponents to his argument! Filibuster or no, eventually
a VOTE IS TAKEN! Our Founding Fathers would guffaw at the insipid tactics being used by the Whiners today.
