IT WAS front-page news this week when Newsweek retracted a report claiming that a US interrogator in Guantanamo had flushed a copy of the Koran down a toilet. Everywhere it was noted that Newsweek's story had sparked widespread Muslim rioting, in which at least 17 people were killed. But there was no mention of deadly protests triggered in recent years by comparable acts of desecration against other religions.
No one recalled, for example, that American Catholics lashed out in violent rampages in 1989, after photographer Andres Serrano's ''Piss Christ" -- a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine -- was included in an exhibition subsidized by the National Endowment for the Arts. Or that they rioted in 1992 when singer Sinead O'Connor, appearing on ''Saturday Night Live," ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II.
There was no reminder that Jewish communities erupted in lethal violence in 2000, after Arabs demolished Joseph's Tomb, torching the ancient shrine and murdering a young rabbi who tried to save a Torah. And nobody noted that Buddhists went on a killing spree in 2001 in response to the destruction of two priceless, 1,500-year-old statues of Buddha by the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Excellent piece. As much as we despise Newsweek, we must not resort to blaming them for this violence, which is wholly the fault of the idiots who commit and encourage it.
I don't understand all the praise being heaped upon this article. Sure, it makes the legitimate points about Islamic hypocrisy, but it also manages to paint Newsweek as being unfairly victimized.
The Qu'ran is Qu'rap.
The jihadist cancer is their religion. This is like saying "what disgraces National Socialism above all is the vast majority of the country's Germans saying nothing and doing nothing against the Aryanist cancer eating away at their nationality."
Before commenting? That's no fun!
Ugh. That's true to form.
Pretty brave stuff! I wonder if Jacoby will have to start looking under his car before he starts it for now on.
Savages.
Okay, one more time for those of you who don't get it: What the terrorists do is NOT a "desecration" of islime....IT IS THE CULT'S DOCTRINE! Islime doesn't follow God's Ten Commandments, and especially not the Fourth Commandment: "You will not commit murder." Islime's commandment is "You will kill all who are not muslime."
In short, a bad Christian or a bad Jew kills, but a good follower of the pedophile false prophet kills. Let's quit saying that these barbarians have "hijacked" or "desecrated" their *ahem* "religion" when in all reality they're behaving IN EXACT COMPLIANCE with its tenets!!!
Otherwise, Jacoby's article was great.
Great, and brave, article. We need to pray for the safety of people who proclaim the truth.
SJ - just a thank you note for all your ping work. Great article.

"But what disgraces Islam above all is the vast majority of the planet's Muslims saying nothing and doing nothing about the jihadist cancer eating away at their religion. It is Free Muslims Against Terrorism, a pro-democracy organization, calling on Muslims and Middle Easterners to ''converge on our nation's capital for a rally against terrorism" -- and having only 50 people show up."
This is why I say that I will personally respect that diseased cult as a religion ONLY when I start seeing Mooseslimes turning these people into the local authorities, or better yet, stoning them in the street.
Until then that Moon God cult needs to be eradicated from the face of the planet.
Is it true that only 50 people showed up for this rally?
Is Islam disrespected? Not where and when it counts.
All I see is the United States Government, not to mention the rest of the political leadership of the World, genuflecting to Islam.
Islam enjoys severing heads. Genuflecting makes that so much easier.
A few more reasons:
"Good advice. But, the lead in did point us to the wrong mindset . . . :-)"
You actually thought there WERE violent riots after those events?
Too many morons on this thread for me. I give up.
WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
Good article, but there are two serious problems. First of all, he shouldn't let NewsWeak off the hook like that. Let's keep in mind that a) They lied; b) They undoubtedly printed the story to make trouble for Bush and our country; c) When you have a homicidal maniac threatening to kill people, you have an obligation not to stir him up further by enraging him.
Also, perhaps Condoleeza slightly misspoke. I think what she meant to say is not that Americans respect the Koran but that American troops and government workers have orders not to disrespect the Koran. I think that's legitimate. There is no excuse for doing that to a crucifix OR a Koran. It's a gratuitous insult--quite different from factual argument, such as pointing out that Islam is a violent, aggressive religion which has murdered and enslaved innocent people ever since the time of Muhammed.
To my mind, it is foolish and disrespectful to desecrate a Koran, but that doesn't mean I can't say what Hillaire Belloc once said, that Islam is fundamentally a heresy of Judaism and Christianity, a fake religion.
Wel, it's called a Crusade, and if the USA ever completely took the gloves off and waged total war again we would scare the living crap out of everyone else on the planet.
