HILLARY GETS IT. Hillary Clinton says she's against illegal immigration. And she would fine employers who hire illegal aliens.
Pundits say the New York Democrat is using this hot-button issue to position herself for the 2008 presidential election. It's a way to hit Republicans from the right. Polls show huge majorities of both Republicans and Democrats oppose illegal immigration -- and are frustrated that President Bush won't do a thing to stop it.
But this issue does not belong to the right. Or it shouldn't. Illegal immigration hurts most liberal causes. It depresses wages, crushes unions and kills all hope for universal health coverage. Progressives have to understand that there's little social justice in an unregulated labor market.
"Liberals are so confused on this issue," says Vernon Briggs, a labor economist at Cornell University and self-described liberal. "Immigration policy has got to be held accountable for its economic consequences."
Many Democrats used to get it. In 1964, President Johnson abolished the Bracero program, which brought in "temporary" farm workers from Mexico. Its demise let Cesar Chavez organize U.S. farm workers. His union won some battles early on, but a new wave of illegal immigrants in the mid-1970s reversed that progress. The union barely exists today.

Nowadays, the messages aren't even mixed anymore. A cheap-labor Republican, George Bush won't enforce the employer penalties. He has a new amnesty program. And he vows to "match any willing worker with any willing employer." Hence, the latest stampede at the southern border.
Sounds like the Democrats have an issue. And if Clinton can seriously address the problem in non-racial terms, she could march straight to the White House. Go for it, Hillary.

Hillary found the key.
If the GOP doesn't get really tough, including some fines and arrests, that could be all she wrote.
I have been saying that Illegal Immigration is the issue that will tear the conservative momement asunder. It is now in the hands of our sworn enemy.
This is the realization of all my deepest fears.
Who says their dithering.?. Seems to be "THE PLAN"... of the Gop..
It IS Hillary TURN.. and the GOP gets lots of plausible denyal brownie points.. when accused of taking a "DIVE" .. (lack of any real action on this issue)..
The democrats took a "DIVE" by selecting John Kerry.. Bush may have lost the election sans Kerry running..
The "SILENCE" on Mexican border INSURGENCY is deafening.?.
If they are NOT insurgents then what are they.?.
By the way it is very suspious that "republicans"(generally) could care LESS about massive voter fraud in 2004, 2000 and probably before that.. and I mean could care less.. The entire democrat party is complicit.. and everybody KNOWs IT too.. its no secret.. Yet, NOTHING, is being done about it..
And I'm not too sure "Read my lips No New taxes" was not a "DIVE" either.. from Pappa Smurf.. against Clinton..
Your analysis is correct but your comclusion is faulty. Perhaps you don't remember the "Economic Law" that said that you could not have inflation and unemployment at the same time???? (shown to be false by that idiot Carter).
Many of us on the right are wanting a fence on that Southern border to keep illegals out. Should Hillary be elected and actually build the darn thing, we will be horrified as it will serve to keep us in!
I couldn't agree more with you. After watching the democrats run the House in the 70s and 80s there's no way I'd ever want to see them get control of that body again.
Okie dokie!
Hah! LOL!!
Yeah, right. There are millions who just can't wait to go to mexico.
Class war populism is something that Democrats do very, very well. And in "What's the Matter with Kansas" there is one very, very valid point. When Clinton decided to get behind NAFTA and chose free trade globalism, he threw away economic populism as an issue and economic populism is the only weapon the Democrats have that can blunt cultural values. After NAFTA it was all downhill for the Democrats. They lost mayoralty after governorship and the House and the Senate.
Illegal immigration, free trade, outsourcing, are issues that harshly impact Joe Sixpack voters in both parties. The party that will champion Joe Sixpack's economic interests AND respect his cultural values will be the majority party for the next generation.

For the record, I'd sooner vote for the Devil Himself ( who is reputed to be a being of his word, all other things aside ) than the woman I have always called "Hillarrhea!"...
What I am trying to do, is point out that this is- in my opinion- this will be a key issue in the next two- perhaps more- elections.
The candidates who most appear to have a solution- rather than just talk, talk, talk about it- will carry the field.
I live in a small southern city, far, far away from Mexico & Central America, and we are being innudated by illegal aliens.
The economic and social costs can be debated all over the map, but they cannot be denied to exist. Worse, the violation of national security in a post 9-11 is intolerable.
We've all heard the stories of Korans & prayer rugs being found along our souther border, but I also hear of Chinese artifacts showning up. WTF? China is not a nation you leave easily or lightly. Something is going on, and we need to get control of it before something worse than 9-11 happens again.
Now it seems she's even got Newt the Suit to shill for her image to become a reborn conservative democrat.
The Republicans have always been the "stupid party." They act like losers and cowards even when they win. They always have RINO's conveniently planted at crucial places to side with the Democrats. They don't fight and they don't care. They cower at the thought of offending the Washington Post and NY Times.
But we are told to vote for them because they are better than the alternative. On my ballot that means John McCain and Jim Kolbe. I'd rather have Democrats than someone who claims to be on my side and stabs my beliefs in the back.
He did...You just don't want to believe his answer...
Yeah, right. There are millions who just can't wait to go to mexico.
Read my disclaimer: "Should Hillary be elected". BTW, Mexico would just be the point of entry; still too close to the evil manical grasp of Hitlary!
On a serious note though, should the leftists assume power and make America the fascist country they desire, I fully expect within 20 years or more, the open persecution of Christians.
Could you imagine the novel uses Hitlary and her Mafia would find for the Patriot Act and McCain/Feingold? I wouldn't want a "fence" heeding my or anyone else's escape from "Paradise".
I know she's lying like a rug. The point is she's stealing an issue the Republican's should own and even a big lib the author knows this issue resonates.
The Republican's are going to be punished by the mushy middle if they don't see the light.
Not to get too far off-topic, but I believe we are already seeing the opening salvoes:
But you know as well as I do that most of the people here at FR will vote for whom they are told to vote for and it won't be Tom Tancredo...
Republicans will put Hillary (or any Democrat) in the White House before they will vote for Tancredo...
I WILL vote for an anti-illegal immigrant candidate (of some party)...
I suspect she is telling the truth...She, like Bush, will legalize ALL illegals, past, present and future...
