A New Jersey state assemblyman has introduced a bill that would allow the government to seize the home or car of anyone whose property contains an illegal firearm.
The legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Louis Manzo, D-Jersey City, authorizes the forfeiture of "motor vehicle, building or premise" if a firearm is found in it that is not possessed legally per state law "even if the firearm was not possessed by the owner of the motor vehicle, building or premise," states a summary of the bill, A3998. The legislation was introduced Thursday.
Manzo pointed out his bill extends government power now reserved for targeting those in possession of illegal drugs.

Set a precedent in one place, it gets applied in another.
Who would have thought it?
Civil asset forfeiture abuse has led to
policing for profit in the drug war, and now that precedent is reaching out to cover guns.
Maybe Tom Paine was on to something...
"He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." -- Thomas Paine

NYPD has a sign on the BQE touting the thousands of cars taken from drunk drivers--BEFORE they were convicted! I laugh when I hear someone say we live in "a nation of law". No we don't and gov't knows it and likes it that way.

At first I thought this said homes with illegal immigrants! In New Jersey, NAH! If Sopranostan ever decided to seize the initiative on that issue, North Newark, Belleville, Paterson, Passaic, Dover, Freehold, Vineland, Bridgeton, and parts of Jersey City would become ghost towns.

That was my first thought.
My second was this:
An armed thug breaks into your home. You own a registered firearm, get the drop on him and capture him. His firearm was illegal.
The city you are in is going through a budget crisis. When the city cops report that a burglar was arrested in your home with an illegal firearm, they seize your house and sell it.

Say what? Its bad enough that local governments are searching for more ways to confiscate property but this is too much!

The city wants a nice property? Send in an informant with an illegally possessed firearm.
