IRVING, Texas - The moment was packed with the kind of tension usually seen only at a major. In the locker room at the Byron Nelson Championship, players huddled around the television as Tiger Woods stood over a 15-foot putt. Upstairs in the family dining area, about 60 people set down their silverware and stopped their chatter to watch. On the course, the 1,500 fans surrounding the 18th green went stone silent.
They witnessed something that had not happened on the PGA Tour in seven years and 142 tournaments.
Woods missed the cut.
"Every guy in the locker room was watching," Jesper Parnevik said. "We're not allowed to bet, but guys were offering $1,000 he would make it."
No wonder there were no takers.
Woods made a slippery 6-foot birdie putt at Torrey Pines three years ago to make the cut on the number. He made a downhill par putt from 4 feet in the Masters two years ago to do the same thing. And who can forget that 6-foot putt in the 2000 PGA Championship to force a playoff, or that 15-footer in the dark at the Presidents Cup.
Maybe that's what was so surprising about this one.
He studied the line from both sides, consulted his caddie, then stood over the ball and went through his routine. One look at the cup. Shift his feet and give it another look. A third look and pull the trigger.
The ball broke gently to the right toward the cup, then flattened out in the final 6 inches and trickled by, a dramatic end to one of the greatest streaks in sports.

Well, if women's golf
changed their dress code, I might call
it a sport . . . for them . . .
And, as true as that foolishness is, you are a FReeper with great depth and intelligence.
LOL!
Golf is not a sport. It's a pastime, a hobby, a stroll through the grass....

A numberr of years ago, someone got the brilliant idea of naming Arnold Palmer "Athlete of the Decade." The collective howl which ensued was deafening. One of our radio sports guys said something like, golf is not a sport; you don't run with the ball, you don't throw the ball, you don't catch the ball; there is no great athletic prowress involved in the game. How could anyone possibly call Arnold Palmer an athlete, let alone Athlete of the Decade?
I have nothing against golf, and Arnold Palmer was a terrific golfer in his day (as Tiger Woods is now), but considering golf an athletic event is a bit ludicrous, IMHO.

ROFL....... the poster hasn't a clue! If he/she tried to play four days in a row you'd need a calculator and oxygen.
;-)
Same place MC Guires steroid use is documented. I've heard Nick Price, Greg Norman and ESPN speak to the issue. I'm sorry I don't have medical records. I don't need medical records of Hulk Hogan to know he's been on the roids.
On clay? I'll bet you're a real star! LOL. Wouldn't want to stress out your delicate knees!
;-)
It appears to be
one Freeper's opinion. But
golf pros speculate:
"With all the talk lately about the use of steroids in major league sports, I wonder, with other people, if steroids are being used in professional golf on any of the Tours?
"Sure tour players are working out, eating better and taking better care of themselves then years ago, but some of these guys are bulking up way to quick for me. The PGA tour doesn't have a policy in place to check for such a thing...the only thing they check for is "hot drivers"....but maybe they should re-think their position. The tour believes that there is no need for such policy because the game of golf is a gentleman's game and parish the thought that one of these "gentleman" would ever take advantage of that - in a game where strength and size are a real plus!
"I do believe that there are tour players who do use steroids and that it's only a matter of time until one or more are found out, and for anybody who believes otherwise, maybe they should start to take steroids to build up their brain so they can understand what's really going on.

If Tiger Woods made 142 consecutive cuts over seven years, then this computes to only 20 tournaments a year. Is that standard for a PGA golfer?
You might want to try to do that with your lame remarks about golf!
By the way genius, have you ever broken 75 on a decent course. No, of course not. You know nothing about golf as a sport.
Find a thread on Maria Sharapova and tennis............. you can leer at the pictures at least.
One thing about Jack is at least he doesn't pump his fist after every shot or putt. I despise golfers who do that. Watch Ernie Els he is good and he doesn't do any fist pumping.
A sport connotes competition............. the bull doesn't have much of a chance.
Tiger, a naturally thin athletic man who bulks up substantially mid year, is one one guy I'm almost sure of.
Dan Patrick was alluding to it on his ESPN radio show in 2003. He got wind from people who worked out with him in Florida.
What people don't understand is that the roids actually help him with his short game & rough play....not his driving.
No carts on the PGA tour.........
Yeh that was great. But there was MUCH, MUCH LESS competition back in those days. But Byron, God bless him!
usa today has a quota of females and minorities that must appear on the front page.
baba streisland for decades appeared every 2 weeks, tiger woods was a mainstay...etc.
