Byron Nelson Plays on Without Tiger Woods (He's Human!)

IRVING, Texas - The moment was packed with the kind of tension usually seen only at a major. In the locker room at the Byron Nelson Championship, players huddled around the television as Tiger Woods stood over a 15-foot putt. Upstairs in the family dining area, about 60 people set down their silverware and stopped their chatter to watch. On the course, the 1,500 fans surrounding the 18th green went stone silent.

They witnessed something that had not happened on the PGA Tour in seven years and 142 tournaments.

Woods missed the cut.

"Every guy in the locker room was watching," Jesper Parnevik said. "We're not allowed to bet, but guys were offering $1,000 he would make it."

No wonder there were no takers.

Woods made a slippery 6-foot birdie putt at Torrey Pines three years ago to make the cut on the number. He made a downhill par putt from 4 feet in the Masters two years ago to do the same thing. And who can forget that 6-foot putt in the 2000 PGA Championship to force a playoff, or that 15-footer in the dark at the Presidents Cup.

Maybe that's what was so surprising about this one.

He studied the line from both sides, consulted his caddie, then stood over the ball and went through his routine. One look at the cup. Shift his feet and give it another look. A third look and pull the trigger.

The ball broke gently to the right toward the cup, then flattened out in the final 6 inches and trickled by, a dramatic end to one of the greatest streaks in sports.

Hogan was Nick Faldo's idol. Back in the early nineties when Faldo was winning a lot - Master's and British Opens - he went to see Hogan - the Wee Ice Mon the Scots called him - and asked for his advice on how to win the U.S. Open.

Hogan's replay was classic Hogan. "Make more birdies."

P.S. For all golf enthusiasts out there, I just finished reading Dan Jenkins latest SLIM AND NONE. Hilarious, topical, filled with golf arcana and very entertaining.

Yes he has to play a number of the Buick events - Torrey Pines for example - as he is their spokesman.

I'm old school. Girls didn't wrestle ('cept cat fights!)

I've got a nephew who wrestles. He's, pound for pound, one tough (ahem!) He helped lift 100lb roofing shingles to the garage roof (when rebuilding my parents garage roof), hoisting them on one shoulder and walking up the ladder like he was strolling. Incredible.

I told him I would never discipline him again, simply because he'd whip my butt!

I'll never understand why someone would stay on a thread to talk about how boring it is. ----- Does this make sense to you?

Right. And I'll tell you something else... I hate stupidity, but more than that, I hate repeated stupidity.

;-)

This thread I started was meant to be a thread about an accomplishment of a great guy... then the goons come to debate steroids and what is a sport. *ssholes!

You think golf is not a sport? Ha! How about baseball? You sit on your butt dozing off for half the game and stand around in the outfield for 48 percent more. Hell, you get more exercise walking through the mall to pick up a dozen golf balls.

Sure you've heard this one, but just in case:

Q: Why is it called golf?
A: Because all the other 4 letter words were in use.

ROFL....... the poster hasn't a clue! If he/she tried to play four days in a row you'd need a calculator and oxygen.

Originally I said, "You may wind up with a club wrapped around your neck."

With some of those kids nowadays, he may have the club shoved where the sun doesn't shine.

LOL

actually we had a girl wrestle my junior year. She was pretty tough herself and she wrestled to a 20-5 record until she got hurt....and that was in Ohio too and wrestling in this state is no joke....

most of the wrestlers I have been around are generally disclipined. Quite a few of them make very good soldiers........

Woods off em

On em

Many better pics out there...the dude is not 180 and is solid muscle.

Mike...I'm not a genius, but after reading your posts, I wouldn't sign an entry form for Jeopardy any time soon.

His wedding pics are better as he looks 160 and that was last fall.

You are not connecting to my point..

Your point is on the top of your head.

This thread was begun to speak of a great accomplishment of a great young man, Tiger Woods. And your selfish and jealous needs have hijacked the thread to be a disgusting debate on steroids. Get lost.

He's also got the luxury of not having to worry about his Tour status for next year, or for the next five years for that matter. Unlike the 'grinders' who need to play every week to win enough money to keep their exemption for next year. Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for the grinders: Number 125 on the money list last year still won over $600K. For playing a game....

But unlike the big team sports like football, baseball, and basketball, in golf, if you don't have wins to back you up, and you have a bad year, you are off the Tour and it's back to Qualifying School. Two years without a win and a bad year and you are also off the Tour.
