Byron Nelson Plays on Without Tiger Woods (He's Human!)

IRVING, Texas - The moment was packed with the kind of tension usually seen only at a major. In the locker room at the Byron Nelson Championship, players huddled around the television as Tiger Woods stood over a 15-foot putt. Upstairs in the family dining area, about 60 people set down their silverware and stopped their chatter to watch. On the course, the 1,500 fans surrounding the 18th green went stone silent.

They witnessed something that had not happened on the PGA Tour in seven years and 142 tournaments.

Woods missed the cut.

"Every guy in the locker room was watching," Jesper Parnevik said. "We're not allowed to bet, but guys were offering $1,000 he would make it."

No wonder there were no takers.

Woods made a slippery 6-foot birdie putt at Torrey Pines three years ago to make the cut on the number. He made a downhill par putt from 4 feet in the Masters two years ago to do the same thing. And who can forget that 6-foot putt in the 2000 PGA Championship to force a playoff, or that 15-footer in the dark at the Presidents Cup.

Maybe that's what was so surprising about this one.

He studied the line from both sides, consulted his caddie, then stood over the ball and went through his routine. One look at the cup. Shift his feet and give it another look. A third look and pull the trigger.

The ball broke gently to the right toward the cup, then flattened out in the final 6 inches and trickled by, a dramatic end to one of the greatest streaks in sports.

You've never stood over a crucial putt (worth $$$) with your heart racing, and needing to make it. Now tell me that controling your emotions, and your body to make it isn't a sport. (I also walk 18 holes, and carry my bag. It's quite exerting, unlike tennis.)

Horse Hockey. Tiger's been ripped since 21. A good workout routine for a 20-something man will do wonders. You might be comparing his physique from his teen years, but for the last 5-6, he's been ripped.

Tiger picks and chooses his tournaments throughout the year, skipping many of the lesser events. All supposedly to have his game peaking for the four majors. He never plays the event the week before a major for instance. He played this event in Texas out of respect for Byron Nelson more than anything else. Thus his total number of tournaments over the time of the streak is not maximum. However, this was an incredible achievement showing remarkable consistency.

That's a joke, right? Have you ever actually played tennis?

You are not connecting to my point......roids did not make Woods a great golfer. They added to his physique (ripped him up), help him maintain peak condition through the year, and do help his fine muscles, adding to his short game.

Roids don't turn you into the incredible hulk.

If I had a link proving Woods does roids, it would be headline news.

You sound like the Bonds supporters before he was busted.

gee let's see here....

Bonds went from a size 7 1/4 head to a size 9 AND had a secondary peak in his career...

Tiger has won golf's major championships over and over again, yet he is still only 180lbs. never mind the fact that he went something like 3 years without taking any time off, until he blew out his knee. You just sound jealous and you have NOTHING to back up your claims but ASSumptions and innuendos....

Oh I have. I've also played volleyball, softball, basketball, run track, and Olympic (collegiate) sport shooting. Hands down, basketball was the toughest physically, but mentally, hands down, OSS and golf win.

And, for the record, I don't have a caddy, and I carry my 50lb bag for 18 hilly holes - sometimes 36 a day. 2 hours of tennis is nothing compared to 8 hours of golf.

Now I'm jealous...I'm a VJ fan & he has won much more than Tiger int he last 2 years. Woods is not 180lbs! HE was 180 last Nov. and now he's probably 210.

I've watched severa lpeople join a gym and openly talk about steroid use......most of them look like a Terrel Owens or a Tiger Woods....not Arnold.

Did you see Woods last week in North Carolina.....his face is huge.

you didn't wrestle I see....Wrestling is harder than basketball and more mental, especially when cutting weight or getting down to weight for a weigh in....then you get to wrestle....
