U.S. Catholics Now Batting for Illegal Aliens

In a statement issued Tuesday, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced that it will "add the voice of the Catholic Church" to the call for major immigration legislation, including a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship for illegal aliens in the United States. Cardinal McCarrick, the Archbishop of Washington said religious teachings justify aiding illegal aliens.

"We go right to the New Testament and say, him or her who is without sin cast the first stone," he said. "How many of us have not violated some laws, whatever they might have been -- either they're traffic laws or immigration laws or tax laws, something like that." Let’s see. If you violate traffic laws, you pay a fine and lose your license. If you violate tax law, you pay a fine, and possibly go to jail. But if you violate immigration laws, we grant you citizenship and confer all the benefits that our entitlement-loving, swollen bureaucracy can offer?

I see by your "About" page, you are a born again Christian, which is true for me too. I am finding it hard to separate my own selfish wants from the message that Christ had for us, but am starting to lean to the Bible for direction. It can be awkward and frustrating to be a selfish human and try to aspire to Christian values. I now understand and respect the President all the more for not jumping the gun and trying to take his time and deal with the problemin a more humane way - it's more proof to me that he really does believe in Christian values. Jesus never said we were to have it easy, but He did make it clear that after loving God with all our hearts and all our souls and all our minds, it was for us to 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' because "all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

God Bless

The USCCB has been goofball moonbat nuts since at least the early eighties. This is not to be a surprise, though it is to be condemned.

I agree, it's not easy to live a Christian life, and I struggle with it daily. But some things are more straightforward than others, like 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' It's not meant to be an impediment for enforcing the law. That's why we do not kick them back to the SW desert, or shoot one out of every 10 illegals that are found, or anything like that. They should be treated as fellow human beings, worth enough for our Lord to shed His blood for them just as He shed it for us... and deport them because they are breaking the law and their very presence here incites other to break the law as well. After all, the right to liberty (which would not last if people were not expected to obey the laws) is a God-given right!

"God makes it pretty clear that aliens are people too..."

But that scripture refers to aliens, not illegal aliens.

Telling people to obey our laws is not oppression.

I think that their primary reason for this stance is that most of the illegals are Mexican Catholics.

If the Church decides to take a stand on what is ostensibly a political situation (invastion by a foreign entity) then it should lose its tax-exempt status.

WASHINGTON, D.C., MAY 11, 2005, (Zenit.org).- U.S. bishops say that the nation's immigration system is "broken and badly needs repair," and have launched a campaign to promote comprehensive immigration reform.

The campaign, "Justice for Immigrants: A Journey of Hope. The Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform," intends to mobilize a network of individuals and organizations that support its goals, as well as create awareness among Catholics on the need for "justice for immigrants."

In a news conference Tuesday, Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., said the goals of the multi-year campaign are four-fold: To educate on the benefits of immigration; To strengthen positive public opinion regarding immigrants; To advocate for just immigration laws; To help immigrants gain access to legal services.

The cardinal commented that the first challenge is to change attitudes.

"Anti-immigrant fervor on TV and radio shows, citizens attempting to enforce immigration laws, and, most disturbingly, the enactment of restrictive immigration laws are evidence of" a negative public attitude toward immigration, stated the cardinal.

"We are, and should remain, a nation of immigrants," Cardinal McCarrick stated.

The cardinal said the Catholic Church has a deep stake in immigration reform because, like the nation itself, it is ethnically, socially and culturally diverse. "Regardless of race, heritage, or national origin, we are one family under God," he said.

If they could just get rid of all the other U.S. Commie Cardinals...

And who would those be?

last time I checked no one was talking about treating them inhumanely, but c'mon, all of our ancestors came here LEGALLY, why do they get a free pass? I know people who are STILL going through the immigration process right now and it takes five years. What a slap in the face to those doing it legally.

My comment was made as "food for thought", as with anything, folks can decide for themselves whether Biblical Principles apply, and whether or not they agree with the Biblical Principles, and finally, whether or not they want to be obedient to Biblical Principles.

As far as our ancestors getting here legally, there are some who were here before us who might claim otherwise. Like the rest, it's all put in the perspective of the eye of the beholder...

Have a great day.

"Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.

We're not mistreating or oppressing them, we're just sending them home.

The Holy See does not have to approve of a policy like this, though there's little doubt that the Vatican supports the US Bishops' immigration policy.

The vote was in 2002, but results are confidential.

"Anti-immigrant fervor on TV and radio shows, citizens attempting to enforce immigration laws, and, most disturbingly, the enactment of restrictive immigration laws are evidence of" a negative public attitude toward immigration, stated the cardinal [Cardinal McCarrick].

How much more disingenuous can this pompous POS get? People in favor of keeping this country a nation of laws and people who would like to see illegal aliens kept out and/or deported are NOT anti-immigrant.

"We are, and should remain, a nation of immigrants," Cardinal McCarrick stated.

Then spread the word, McCarrick...

Illegal aliens are not immigrants.

Both. How is an "immigration policy" supposed to bind the consciences of the faithful?

The American bishops have also mounted a concerted effort in opposition to the death penalty. The Vatican approves of this effort.

But how does this bind the consciences of the faithful?

Catholics are still perfectly free to support both the death penalty and a "close the borders" policy if they so choose, as neither of these is part of Catholic doctrine.
