Was World War II worth it? (Buchanan barf alert)
WorldNetDaily ^ | May 11, 2005 | Patrick J. Buchanan

Posted on 05/11/2005 9:08:36 AM PDT by EveningStar

If the objective of the West was the destruction of Nazi Germany, it was a "smashing" success. But why destroy Hitler? If to liberate Germans, it was not worth it. After all, the Germans voted Hitler in.

If it was to keep Hitler out of Western Europe, why declare war on him and draw him into Western Europe? If it was to keep Hitler out of Central and Eastern Europe, then, inevitably, Stalin would inherit Central and Eastern Europe.

Was that worth fighting a world war – with 50 million dead?

"fair and square" ~ you get to that point if and only if you ignore a few murders along the way.

Well, I've read his books and usually read his columns. I know where he's coming from. It has nothing to do with anti-semitism or anything else these people are raving about. He's an excellent historian and is asking a valid historical question. Some of these people forget that he's not just a commentator. He worked closely with two of the preeminent men in the Cold War struggle, Reagan and Nixon.

And you can write off all the FReepers who support Buchanan, whose campaign manager was a COMMUNIST named Lenora Fulani. From what I've read of their comments here, they are incensed by this notion that communism did not get the same outrage that national socialism did. What is so hard about condemning both equally?

And of course, there are the rabid anti-Israel (anti-Jew) FReepers, whose motives stand on their own. I don't respond to anti-semitic stormfronters, no matter how many times they bring up Pollard or the USS Liberty (as if other allies have not made mistakes, including us. Didn't we shoot down some Canadians in the beginning of the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan?). I've had my fill of their kind on the left. Same hate, different reasons.

If Buchanan is a Reagan-like conservative, then why does he advocate postitions that are antithetical to the policies of Ronald Reagan?

1)Because he is "Reagan-like", not Reagan cloned.

2)Because conservatives have a healthy perspective on the natural state of man and therefore can admire those with whom they feel a kinship without mistaking them for Gods or agents of God.

BTW, thanks for posting and interesting picture of Pat's populist side.

I hope this is not the view of all Paleo-Conservatives.

Pat fell off the cliff around 2002.

Respectfully, (IMO) Pat was slowly but relentlessly prodded into irrelevancy (beginning the day after that speech) by the elitist opinion makers of both the right and the left.

No one can survive the attack of those thousand knives.

And now he is irrelevant. He is not taken as seriously by either ends of the political spectrum anymore and is considered by many conservatives an out of touch buffoon, cemented by his association with admitted communist Lenora Fulani.

As a conservative American and proud Zionist, I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

If you want to call Buchanan's trashing of Ronald Reagan's economic policies "populism," go right ahead.

As long as we both know that Pat Buchanan is no Ronald Reagan, nor is he one to carry his mantle.

Would you like to defend the deisel fuel comments?

Every now and then, Pat's inner Nazi comes screaming out. Remember when Pat hooked up with Lenora Fulani, the Red, the Jew-baiter?

To be fair with Pat Buchanan, he does speak of the West, that is, the United States but also Great Britain and France. So he asks rhetorically that if England and France wanted to declare war on Hitler to keep him out of the Western "sphere", then it was a blunder.

Apart from that, I am extremely surprised anyone can ask whether fighting WW2 was worth it.

I don't want some paleo-Conservatives saying things like Pat Buchanan doesn't speak for me and etc. I want to walk a fine line.

Yes, you are right.

Let's bridle capitalism. Let's set restrictions on private investment.

Let's make it illegal, or very costly, for US companies to lay off workers.

No wonder Pat Buchanan found a home with Lenora Fulani and Jimmy Hoffa.

It may seem implausible to younger FReepers but the Allies did not fight WWII to save the Jews and others targeted by the Nazis. As I recall, world Jewish leaders asked the Allies to bomb the camps and the trains once folks really figured out what the Final Solution entailed by mid war and the Allies refused to divert resources.

We fought the Axis to destroy their hegemony and how it affected us in particular.

Buchannan curiously leaves Japan out of his convoluted logic.

However...I too am glad to see Bush letting the light of day shine on Yalta and FDR (and Hiss)'s betrayals to Uncle Joe.

That ruse has lived long enough. It's nice to see some heat fall on it.

Stop all tax breaks for companies that have manufacturing facilities in other countries?

That is a quick way to kill the entire manufacturing industry in the US.

Name one billion dollar manufacturer in the US that does not own a manufacturing facility abroad.
