San Jose police investigating the origin of a finger they say was planted in a bowl of Wendy's chili said Tuesday that they were receiving assistance from Mexican law enforcement officials.
On Tuesday, KGO Channel 7 reported that Mexican police had searched a ranch north of Guadalajara on Monday that belonged to relatives of the husband of Anna Ayala, the 39-year-old Las Vegas woman in jail accused of planting the finger in her chili.
San Jose police spokesman Enrique Garcia confirmed they were receiving cooperation from Mexican authorities but did not say which agencies were assisting or what help they have provided.
"The San Jose Police Department has asked for assistance from Mexican law enforcement on follow up on this case, and they are assisting us," Garcia said. "However, we are not providing details about what we're asking for them to do. "
Garcia said it was routine police procedure to continue follow-up investigations and involve other outside police agencies if necessary.
Mexico "is not the only place we're doing follow up in, but it is one place," he said.
The reported search in Mexico may help explain one of the biggest mysteries about the chili case: where the finger actually came from. Law enforcement officials have so far been unable to match the 1 1/2-inch finger tip with any fingerprints in the FBI's national database.

Anna Ayala, seen during her arraignment at Santa Clara County Superior Court in San Jose on Monday, had visited Mexico before she claimed she found a finger in Wendy's chili March 22.
Shop teachers are being questioned at this very moment.
Chili con carne
Oooh, do I ever want to slap that smirk off that creature's smug face!
She should take that smirk off her face. I hope they can convict her and ship her off to jail.
I really hope she does some jail time!!
Let her do it in Guadalajara! (and STAY there when she gets out)
"Law enforcement officials have so far been unable to match the 1 1/2-inch finger tip with any fingerprints in the FBI's national database."
I suggest they try matching the fingertip against "missing persons" rather than criminals.
More likely it came from murder (or at least the violation of a corpse) rather than being "volunteered" by a "criminal" in their database.
"oh how much easier life would be if everyone submitted their prints and dna to the authorities at birth..." < /sarcasm >
If this is a fraud on her part then the punishment can be held up as a warning to all the frivolous lawsuit scam artists - I'd make the penalty some real hard time.
Plus, I'd make sure her lawyer was held responsible for his part in it as well.
I've been out of town and out of The Freep, computer and cell phone touch for 2 weeks and I get back and they're STILL talking about THIS?!!!
Jeeesh!
You know I don't even think that anyone was murdered.
I think that it was a scam with a family member or close friend who was willing to do without a finger for the hope of 'winning' a large settlement.
It could have been a farm accident (with no insurance) being used to better their lives.
Rather than trying to match the print to something on file, they need to do genetic testing. They could quickly learn if she is related to the individual who lost the finger.
Local San Jose news this a.m. said they have checked the finger for formaldahyde but they didn't say what the results were. They also said that Ayala knows somebody who works at a mortuary/crematory and that the finger might belong to a corpse who was cremated.
It's just that she's sued and won before. So I figured that she planned it. Who knows, could have occurred to her after an accident, why not?
I'm beginning to think so too. I bet you could live like a king in Mexico with a few hundred grand.
Clintons (both) activities should be probed like this case.
It's humbling to realize how the other half lives. Could you imagine making such a calculation?
