Washington, DC, May. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. House has sent legislation to the Senate that would raise the federal debt limit to nearly $9 trillion, a $781 billion increase.
The House agreed to the increase under an automatically executing provision in the 2005 budget resolution approved by the House and Senate late last week.
The House officially sent the Senate a separate piece of debt-relief legislation increasing the limit as mandated by the self-executing provision in the budget resolution.
Gaining approval of the separate bill through the gambit avoided the need for a politically costly debate on the House floor over increasing the debt ceiling again and highlighting the inter-party split on the issue.
Fiscal conservatives within the GOP have been clamoring for greater fiscal discipline on budget matters considering the massive federal deficits, estimated to reach another record in dollar terms this year, for the second consecutive year.

Why, /shakes head, why....
Thank God Bush gave American old people a NEW entitlement!
Add several trillion more over the next few years!
To hell with the people who have to pay it!

"That is so frickin sad."
Ya know, I appreciate all the president is doing for the world but I didn't know the cost would be us getting thrown overboard.
I'm surprised that someone hasn't shown up yet defending the GOP's version of socialism...
Demcorats = Tax and Spend
Republiucans = Borrow and Spend

The talking points haven't arrived yet.
Someone remind me why I voted GOP?
Could the Dems be any worse?
Especially when it's only a temporary cut. Taxes go back up automatically after ten years, without Congressmen even having to go on record as supporting it. So it's not surprising that this cut won't result in decreased spending, because there's no incentive for it to. All it will do is add to the deficit, and discredit the cause of cutting taxes in the future.
I'm at least happy to see that mathematical-ineptitude of our GOP controlled government does not reflect on their conservative constituents (or it does not appear so at all from the posts so far).
So, the big question on my mind is, *we're* the ones who put these guys in power, *we're* the ones who were out campaiging and writing letters and blogging and pulling the weight in these last elections, *we're* in unanimous consensus that the government needs to reign in spending... and yet, we're being completely ignored?
I guess the GOP has decided that if they put a good enough show on to convince us that they're better than the Dems then they can screw us over on everything else.
12 zeros! they are out of control!
when will people wake up? when do we start dumping tea?!
I can guarantee you this. If Al Gore or John Kerry proposed any of the spending itmes that Bush have, we would have seen the Republicans in Congress fighting tooth and nail over them.
The irony is that Hillary and the new centrists of the Dem party will harp on this as an issue in '08. And they, very likely, will be successful in converting it into a Dem win in '08.
If you're going to spend like Canada, you have to tax like Canada. Don't be like Canada.
On the other hand Canada is currently paying off its debt which is about 1/2 per capita what the US debt is.
The only "conservative" to ever conserve anything was Teddy Roosevelt.
