Tony Snow just finished an interview with Trent Lott. Senator Lott wanted to respond to an article in Roll Call to the effect that he had crafted a deal to dump certain judges to guarantee others an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor. According to an account (I didn't hear the interview), Lott called the report "exaggerated," adding that he has worked with Ben Nelson "from time to time" on a deal, but that the proposed deal "isn't much of a deal at all." Lott also stated that he won't accept criticism from Republicans for working with Democratic senators because "they're the same ones who threw me overboard. I'm free. I don't have to work with them anymore." Lott called the Senate a "dysfunctional institution." Lott may consider himself part of the solution to this problem, but in the context of the confirmation battles that remains to be seen.
Agreed. His comment to Thurmond was apparently a "rerun" of a comment he made in 1980. At some kind of rally he introduced Thurmond, I believe, by saying "if he had been elected we wouldn't be in the mess we're in." A throwaway line, and I won't argue it wasn't somewhat insensitive regarding Thurmond's record, but we WERE in one hell of a mess at that time! Carter was president, the economy was in the crapper, the Soviets were expanding and the Iranian hostage crisis was round-the-clock news! Lott's problem was that, recycled 22 years later, the context looked so different.
that's one reason I'm not in public life. You have to answer for what you say, every second.
somebody needs to lets his donors know of his concern fro the country...
CSPAN 2 is now replaying the interview this morning with Sen Ben Nelson about this issue.
Actually, even this guy would be an improvement:
What an idiot. Why does he think they threw him overboard? LOL He was totally worthless to the GOP way back then.
Well, that much he has correct.
Me, too -- and wasn't the blowing out of proportion done by Dems and their henchmen? The Dems he want to cozy up to? It would be rational for him to say "A pox on both their houses," but to throw the Republicans on the mercy of the Dems is incomprehensible to me.
Should be named Trent Not. I have been calling him that for years.
We could throw 'em ALL overboard and not be mistaken in any case. I just happen to like Republican liars better than I like Democrat liars. I'd just like to have a new crop of liars with which to work.
Don't go looking for virtue among any of the vultures. Lott is no worse than he was before. He's just more honest now.
"He stepped in a huge pile of Rottweiler diarrhea"
An apt description....ROTF.
He DOES realize his constituents are Republicans right? If he doesn't want to listen to critisism, fine, kick his butt to the curb for fresher more conservative blood.
Yep. Bush and the rest of the Republicans are jumping through hoops for Tom DeLay, who's now down to using "everybody else does it too" to justify his ethical quandry.
All Trent Lott did was try to make an old man feel better on his birthday, and Bush acted like Lott was wearing a sheet and a hood.
And Frist is not even as effective as Lott was in moving legislation through the Senate.
Trent's got a secure seat, so he can free-lance a little if he wants to.
Of course. I wonder if he truly believed that being such an easy guy for Daschle to work with was going to save him. It's a mistake Republicans have made often and I'm hoping they are catching on. Frist seems to not be falling for Dingy Harry's ploys so far.
Yes, ma'am. He sure is.
Trent "hors de combat" Cave-A-Lott
Fair enough! I do not think he was a particularly effective leader, either.
Since you live in Singapore I doubt you'll do much of anything.
Senator Pickering - - -
Yes, it rolls off the tongue quite nicely.
Hasn't improved any with Frist.
