That comment was an excuse to remove him, I believe Lott was doomed from the beginning the White House wanted him out and it was only a matter of time before he was gone, if he had not said what he said, at some point he would have done something else to get into trouble and the result would have been the same. I also believe many of the Republican's have been upset with mishandling of the impeachment process when he appeared to be more interested in his own self image then the impeachment process, which in the end endeared him to no one.
