'single intruder or a small band, apparently based in Europe' Perhaps the intruders were based in Europe.
Or China and North Korea could conceivably be implicated since they have been said to have state-sponsored computer intrusion programs.

I certainly get a large number of attempted hacker attacks on my home PC that originate in China. My McAfee firewall stops about 20 attacks from China every week. They appear to be testing our defenses against cyber-attack.

Oh, joy. Place your bets here, folks: was it A: a 19-year-old Euroweenie anarchist looking to create chaos, B: a pedo-worshiping Moosie fundamentalist probing our cyber-security, or C: some America-loathing, Greenpeace-enabling, Continental vegan Leftist looking to stir things up?
OK, I know how much overlap there is there. I'm just trying to keep the wagers in three separate pots, OK? LOL :-)

Makes you want to form a cyber-posse, and render the culprit's fingers keyboard-resistant, doesn't it? Believe me, if you could explore the dark nether-regions of my fertile mind......

I'm having a lot of attacks against all of my systems trying out a long list of account names recently. (Those are always happening, but this one seems a lot more comprehensive.)

My elderly mom bought a computer about 6 years ago, and uses it primarily for email. She knows absolutely nothing about firewalls, hacker attacks, and the like. I figure there are tens of thousands of people like her hooked up on the internet.
1. How likely is it some mischief has occured to her computer?
2. What's the worst I should be worried about?
3. Would you advise that I tell her to junk it and get a Webtv?
4. Which leads to another question. Are Webtv users immune from such things?

Hackers never do anything without leaving a message in the code. I wonder what the message is?

The only thing I have running is a Sygate personal firewall, and I use Mozilla FireFox. Nothing else.
I haven't had a single problem, be it a virus, spam, etc. in years.
