Wal Mart says it imported about $18 billion in goods from China in 2003. The annual sales for that year by Wal Mart was approximately $250 billion dollars.
However, when you walk through your local Wal Mart and look on the label of products in the store the majority of products say "Made in China". I went through my local Wal mart the other day and was surprised on what I found. Just about all the Black & Decker and Stanley tools were made in China. GE toasters, microwaves, and vacuum cleaners were all made in China. I looked at the Mothers Day cards from Hallmark. Guess what? Made in China. I won't even remark on where 80% of the toys were made.
One of the only few items I picked up that were made in America was the Rubbermaid line of products.
Is Wal Mart skewering their true import numbers from China? Is the $18 billion they say they import from China only from true Chinese companies?
Since Wal Mart is buying goods from Black & Decker or GE are they considering these goods, even though made in China, as non imports because they were purchased from American Companies?
Is a giant shell game be played out by Wal Mart?
I estimate my local Walmart has around 65-75% of it's products made in china (not counting food items). Go to you local Wal Mart and check out the labels. You will be shocked. I was.
And the reason that I should lay awake nights worrying about what Wal-Mart imports is???
so what....
do you have any sort of link newbie?
Do you think rudie and toddster will ask for a link?
Maybe. Why do I care? Is it illegal? Immoral? Unconstitutional? Would I get a better deal otherwise?
One would have to be insane to do that, so why don't you loosen up and tell us exactly what your agenda is?
No. I do not visit Walmart, nor own stock in it (as far as I know).
If they mark it up the typical 5 times from what it costs them, that accounts for almost $100 Billion in sales.
do you have any sort of link newbie?
So what if they're a newbie? It's a good post. Well worth reading. We know wal-mart was stabbing us in the back over a bottom line.
yeah whatever....
just go ahead and bash WalMart. This is how the world works and I kind of like the low prices myself....
WalMart is no different than any other department store chain.
The last time I did any major shopping in WalMart I made a point of looking at all the labels when I got home. The vast majority of items were made in Latin American countries and with the exception of the GE mixer (made in china) all other kitchen products were made in the United States.
I also have a problem with the way mal-marts has a price posted on the item you buy, but when it gets to the registure, it's always priced higher.
Well, as far as I could guess, the agenda would be the undesirability of strong Chinese development as a strategic competitor/potential enemy, and thus the desirability of shrinking trade with China (via boycott of Chinese-made goods if necessary) and, of couse, stopping technology transfers/ outsorcing/ investment there. If so, it is a legitimate agenda.
I'm not sure anything is made in America (USA) any more.
I recently bought
Spalding summer shorts. 1 pair was made in Romania. 1 pair was made in Turkmenistan.
Different brand: One pull-over shirt was made in El Salvador. Another was made in Taiwan.
VCR Video cables - made in China.
S-Video cable - made in China.
Emerson TV/VCR manual - printed in Malaysia.
Emerson VCR manual - printed in China.
Memorex DVD+R blank disks - made in Taiwan.
Engraving pen - made in China.
[Even some of the canned meat products I have in the kitchen are products of Brazil and Canada.]
I did find a roll of clear packaging tape - made in the USA.
I like the low prices also, and it's closer to me than a lot of other places, that sell the same items for higher prices.
I have to shop there. I have no other options now.
Mark up by 5 times? You have to be kidding. Vlassic pickles went bankrupt because of Wal Mart. Vlassic was making something like 1-2 cents per container. Vlasic wentto Wal Mart the next year and asked for a 5% increase and Wal Mart came back with waning a 5% decrease.
Vlassic lost the Wal Mart account over this and this was the pivitol point in their bankruptcy.
I estimate my local Walmart has around 65-75% of it's products made in china...
You are probably right at 70%. Many cleaning products are made here or Mexico. The guns and automotive products from America, Mexico, China.
What do We still make that We could buy?
Do you realize how stupid your argument is?
there ya go
