Retired Army Col. David Hackworth, a decorated Vietnam veteran who spoke out against the war and later became a journalist and an advocate for military reform, died Wednesday in Mexico, where he was receiving treatment for bladder cancer, his wife said. He was 74.

"He died in my arms yesterday morning," his wife, Eilhys England, said Thursday.

Hackworth, a syndicated columnist for King Features, advocated a streamlined military and improved conditions for troops.

the journalist who noticed that Boorda was wearing an incorrect decoration????????

No. That would have been LtCol Roger Charles USMC(Ret.) who initally exposed Boorda.

Hackworth should have known that army commanders like to attack controversial issues IN HOUSE before things migrate up the chain.

If he was anything worth what he professed to be in caring about soldiers, anyway.

The Abu Ghraib incident (and I have vigorously condemned it), could have been dealth with if the great Colonel, who was well known, had sent it up the chain of command.

Instead, he took the low road by releasing the pictures to our soldiers' #2 enemy, the US MEDIA.

I didn't disagree with him because of his politics because I don't know what his politics were.

I disagreed with his deductive reasoning and cogitive thinking processes. In other words, despite the fact he was a military man he never did connect the dots when it came to the war on terror, the Middle East, the Iraqi war and the Left.

He felt he was right in his own mind on this subject. Fine. But to me he was "left" in his own min......siding with the liberals in this war.

What actual good he did for moral support and morale for our troops ("his grunts" so it's said) with his liberal Iraqi position I'll leave to everyone's own unemotional and honest analysis.

RIP, Hack, I used to know ye.

Because he could not get the treatment here, I am sure. Years ago I had a boss, who had all the money in the world. He caught cancer and him and his family and friends went around the world looking for a miracle treatment. He of course never found it and he died in some flee bag cancer center in Europe. Desperate people do desperate things.

I think Hack realized a little earlier than most of us that the War on Terror is being fought once again with the politicians instead of the military in charge. Somebody has to stick up for the troops when pols play budget games, 1-world politics, and bad chess with them. As with Vietnam, those who serve in the War on Terror are even more patriotic if they know this. We may even have to ask if in an advanced state of superpower if this is unavoidable? The fact is, 9/11 probably required a more substantial response than we've yet given. Maybe Hack instinctively knew this and couldn't stand to sit by without complaining. We do take our troops for granted -- that's human nature. He fought that.

Yes, that who I was thinking of. Couldn't put the name with the face. Thanks.

Not so fast. Your description fits Col. Hackworth. I don't know who this Col. Hunt is. But, it's been a year or so since I saw Col. Hackworth on FNC, and he had been a regular (often on H&C).
