Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.
Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

I loved her before this and I thought even better of her afterward. This was not a thing for 3rd graders. It was for adults. Mrs. Bush could not have been better. The tone was perfect. If anyone was put off by the horse line, the Chippendale line, the Desperate Housewives line, or anything else in it, then they ought to worry about themselves. It was an appropriate talk to her audience and it was an appropriate show even if you know it is going to be broadcast on the evening news where kids will see it.
Nothing wrong with being nuts, plain or salty.
Thank you for pinpointing the time; and wasn't there some really nasty thread about divorce?
You haven't seen the posts calling her a whore, white trash and worse. Much worse.
And you obviously haven't seen the posters who attack others Christianity because we somehow just aren't Christian enough for them.
So don't you DARE tell me I can't stand religious people.
Im sure Barbara Bush thought it was funny too...her whole family teases her......and I agree with you 100%...
Exactly. And real Christians don't go around telling other Christians they somehow just aren't good enough.
You're reading a bunch of idiots attacking the President's wife? Is that what you like? I guess you didn't like my description of you, but apparently it fits perfectly. How's that for "drool and bile"???????
You're right, Dog Gone. I call them the Perpetually Offended.
Michelle, Michelle, Michelle...
You, of all people, should have a firm grasp of the meaning of context.
Would you care to think that statement through one more time?
Jesus! What is it with you people? You call anyone with a differing point of view humorless, Godly serious, some call us extremist, or even Taliban. Can't you see that the very tack you are taking makes you just as bad as those you pass judgment on?
MY problem isn't with the Jokes. They are funny. Really they are.
My problem was with WHO TOLD THEM. It's NOT funny to have the First Lady make crude jokes and sexual innuendo ANYWHERE while her husband is STILL in OFFICE.
Does that make me an extremist?
Am I too full of myself?
Does this mean I don't have a sense of humor? Since you seem to be the expert on who does and doesn't have one.
Sheesh.
Ah, you are correct! I had forgotten about that one. Selective amnesia...you're right, it was a very unhappy thread. :(
Give me a royal break!
I remember very clearly, a tasteless cartoon used by Free Republic during the last fund raiser.
And yes, it was funny.
Using Laura to gain plaudits from the Left or the MSM is not going to do a thing to lessen their hostility toward GWB.
If anything, that performance will only encourage them to see GWB as stupid, boring, weak, inadequate, and capable of being pushed around --just the way they want to see him.
And that won't do a thing to enhance GWB's chances of seeing any of his second term priorities accomplished --getting Social Security reform passed, getting tort reform, getting a sound energy policy enacted, or getting John Bolton and conservative judges confirmed.
Unfortunately, if you speak in public, someone will be offended ... So public speaking should be outlawed.

Yep, and I'd bet that's why it was there, too.
Now I am sophomoric and gleeful, I see. What else is new? Not much, apparently.
Why are some of you so pissed off that a few folks didn't like the tone of a freaking speech? Seriously, who cares? The sky is not going to fall, and the big tent is not afire.
Agree with your numbers 1 and 2. I'll add number 3: The Desparate Housewives joke was merely a jab at GWB for being sound asleep by 9.
One can not lead, as Bill Clinton so eloquently illustrated for us, if you stand around all day worrying about offending someone. In the long run, everyone will be offended and only your greatest weakness will be left for all to ponder because you never had the courage to do what was right.
Speaking as one who loved Laura's routine, I just realized that what bothers me the most is the fact that some of those with whom I agree on many, many issues are appearing to be exactly what the left has described them asPetty, small minded and judgmental. I don't like it.
To those I disagree with: Be disappointed or even aghast. But please, please don't cast Laura out as a "whore" or a "slut" because of it. It cheapens the whole notion of a whore or a slut. I imagine you as the people who stood in the corner whispering in dismay when Jesus allowed Mary Magdalene to wash his feet with perfume at a banquet. After all...it was sooo inappropriate. Never mind that a real life human connection was taking place. Kind of like what happened between the presstwits and Laura and George Saturday night.
Yep.
