'24' : An hour of realism
The Washington Times ^ | 4/29/05 | Christian Toto

Posted on 05/02/2005 2:32:12 PM PDT by Evolution

Fox's "24" is pulling off the unthinkable this season. No, it's not that it's one-upping previous seasons with an electric blend of nightmare terrorist scenarios and bold twists. It's that it's dispensing with the politically correct evasions that pervade prime time episodic television. "24" identifies the terrorist enemy without flinching and lets the good guys fight to win -- without apologies. In the process, the show is earning a conservative cult following.

What IS your guys point? That you have zero, zilch, nada, imagination?

Uh, the author claimed the show was realistic. I showed that it wasn't. Sorry that bothers you so much.

We need the ultimate "crossover" show where Jack meets Vic Mackey!

I'll tell you one thing, Vic Mackey would NEVER, EVER have allowed that Secret Service guy to stop him from getting Habib Marwan. Mackey lose a bust? You kidding?

Yeah, realism -- sure. This guy never sleeps, and an entire year of events happens in one day. Apparently the security of the entire country rests on the shoulders of one guy... yep, that's realism!

ROLMAO!!!! I totally agree with you! After last night's incredible surgery intervention where Jack single-handedly tried to save Paul, I turned to my husband and said, "Maybe he'll make breakfast for everyone too!" I wish he had turned to Audrey and killed her instead. I HATE HER!

Although the underlying plot line is feasible to some degree, one has to really suspend reason to think some of the situations depicted could actually occur.

I do however love the fact that it is, for the most part, not PC. At times it actually shows how absurd PC thinking really is.

All in all I find 24 to be thoroughly entertaining.

IMHO.....

But boy, if the security of the USA DID rest with one guy--wouldn't you want it to be Jack?

Funny you should say that. My wife and I were watching the news last night (Special Report with Brit Hume, of course) and they had a story about Iran and North Korea's nuclear ambitions. We were discussing how there were no good options for the US in either case when I said: "We shuold just send in Jack Bauer because he kicks a**"

Yes, the show is unrealistic in many ways, but it is good fun for sure!

You would watch a season of TV for this?

In theory, yes.

In practice, no, because I know someone else will watch the season and except the good parts for me, saving me a lot of time.

I really, really love the Internet. I'll just point out that the screen grab should have been rendered at 14:9 rather than 4:3.

My imagination is just fine. However, I try not to confuse it with reality.

"My imagination is just fine. However, I try not to confuse it with reality."

If your imagination were fine you'd realize that 24 is a theatrical representation of reality. What do you expect them to do? Hire the CIA and AlQueda to play the parts?

24 is reality in the sense that there are people who would like to see us dead and we do use technically sophisticated counter ops against them.

And I'm saying their theatrical representation of reality isn't very realistic. However, the author of this piece said it WAS realistic. I disagree. That is it.

You are trying to set up some kind of circular argument to make a point. However, circular arguments never get to a point. So adios...

What gets me is that Pat Buchanan is a so called "constitutionalist". Meaning he interprets the constitution the way HE sees it. Such as his opposition to the Patriot Act.

Tell you what. If a nuke ever did go off in the USA, Martial Law would be in order. Detention would be indefinite and the authority would be the barrel end of a gun..

Of course. It's just a show. I really hope CTU is not that inept. They can never manage to apprehend anyone without having 90% of their engagement team wiped out. They also seem to be woefully understaffed.

I remember Clancey telling us about smart bombs and painting targets, then gulf 1 happened and we saw it in action and many other "secrets" that came to life.

Being on the other side of the security wall I was amazed at what Clancy put in his stories. I figured he had someone tipping him off with hints. But yes, it is amazing to see the secrets become real. For example, would the government really end the SST (Blackbird) program if they did not already have something better?
