Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

Untwist your panties already! The joke about the city dude trying to milk a male horse is as old as the hills in flyover country, and it's not considered risque. I grew up in Wisconsin where milking is common. Horror upon horrors, it involved the manipulation of an animal's mammaries! If you think this risque, I trust you have the dignity to avoid consuming dairy products.
Yet the comment you made that prompted me to make my point was about a post not addressed to you.
As to feeling love, it appears to be you making hostile commentary to others, not the other way around.
Granted, several of the Founding Fathers were personally immoral. However, neither they nor society at large regarded their errant behavior as anything but deviations from a generally accepted moral standard.
That being said, there are certain things men have in common, and certain things women have in common. In this case, I think Laura poking fun at the tendency of men to come home from work and need some down time, while wives need to decompress and talk about their day. It's just the way God made us. It's a very funny dynamic and it would do all of our marriages well to acknowledge it.
Quite frankly, I wonder sometimes if the reason men look so stupid in this culture is because women no longer laugh at themselves. If we had a better sense of humor about who we are and quit taking my needs (blech) so doggone seriously the contrast would be reduced between the two and men would be elevated.
In other words...We need to lighten up and laugh at ourselves more...and then it all becomes part of the human condition.

Surely those are characteristics you sneer at.
And what's the harm in that? I mean, it's just a little step further down that slippery slope. Not much worse than anything that's aired on network TV before. Can't be any harm in watching the show and helping to increase ratings and profits for that show - I mean, increased viewership won't give networks incentive to come up with something slightly worse than Desperate Housewives for their next smash hit. And we all know that it's just a joke and there really aren't problems with failed marriages and adultery and bad behavior in society, and that people aren't impressionable and some will use the show as rationalization for their transgressions.
Yep, there's no harm at all in watching that show.
No. All I'm saying is, if we find ourselves in one of those increasingly-rare instances when we're deadlocked, my wife submits. It's preferable to fighting.
The word "submit" really gets an undeserved bum rap these days.
The press violates the spirit of this event with each and every story they file on this. The only outcome will be this dinner not happening next year because apparently sense of humor and backyard BBQ banter has become political territory. I can't wait for the question in the next presidential debate... "would you or do you tell off color jokes in the company of adults at a roast?"

You opened your wife up to criticism when you based your accusations against Laura Bush on the opinions of your wife's exaggerated reaction to a few jokes. Maybe you should consider keeping your family problems private.

That's pretty funny. Because I think there should be a lick of decorum from the bully pulpit, and a GOP first lady shouldn't do off-color stuff, I'm an uptight prude?

But I think there need to be certain standards or limits, especially when it comes to the presidency, and especially in this day and age when the MSM is doing everything in its power to tear down what few standards we have left.
But if that makes me a prude to you, so be it. Someone has to do it.
I think they know very well the true meaning of the joke there depraved minds are rejoicing in making it into something that it is not.
