Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

I did initially wince at this one but in retrospect and after seeing how Lynne Cheney laughed at her "new SS code name" I do not think they took any offense in the comments.
For goodness sake they are grown women and in the case of of Lynne Cheney a grandmother and author let us not forgot her more dubious book "Sisters". I doubt much really shocks Lynne Cheney and I say this as someone who absolutely adores the Cheney family but I think they are pretty broad minded and don't mind the odd sexual innuendo here and there. Some of the looks Dick gives Lynne at times I think says it all.
You don't get it. I posted something critical about it and I was attacked. I like George and Laura Bush. They've brought dignity back to the White House and are good people. However, I still reserve the right to point out that Laura made an error in judgement by telling suck off-color jokes. Those of us offended by her bawdiness on this occasion have been beaten bloody on these threads. I'm not starting a witch hunt, I just pointed out that her jokes were not acceptable coming from a First Lady.
*GASP!* Could it be that the First Lady is really a South Park Republican?!
So Mr. Corn would not allow his 4 year old to watch it? I should hope not, she was on at 10:00 PM!
Having watched it live, I can tell you there was nothing a 4 year old would understand. Ask questions perhaps, but our four year old grandson, who was staying with us, was already in bed, where he belonged.
Apparently you don't know how good and fun-loving their marriage is.....
Nicely put Ohio
Wow, you people are really reaching!
It's amazing to watch, isn't it?
All the while they whine about being "attacked" for their vicious remarks about a fine woman, THE FIRST LADY of our country, lewd distasteful smears about here just slip right by them.
Saturday night,Sunday, and today...welcome to day 3.
Do you really think this will be a campaign issue? How many people actually watched this, or will even have heard about it?
When you get down to brass tacks, and those that ACTUALLY vote.....well, I think you see my point.
If you don't think the Gipper was up there with his head hung back guffawing, then you know a different RR than I do.
You, sir (and I use the term "sir" loosely) are no gentleman. You prove yourself the male equivalent of what you accuse the First Lady.
I never claimed to be.
I suggest you reread my post, because I have defended Mrs. Bush, not attacked her. I replied to that quote, I did not make it.
So9
I agree with you; that was a pretty offensive remark.
I agree.
Laura Bush is a beautiful person inside and out.
I only have the utmost respect for her. IMO she is the best First Lady we have ever had.
I don't understand why FR has so many weird posters lately.
It seems there is always someone trying to crash a thread and start trouble. Happened to me yesterday. (and some are not newbies either)
You accuse the First Lady of horrific things, make a sarcastic comment about her stripping at the event next year, and now you're whining about being beaten bloody??
It might lead me to believe that you are not only crude and humorlss, but are also a wimp.......
First, I disagree with any notion that the FL is a "w****". Let that be said.
But, as for wideawake, saying nothing does not mean agreement. And.. I do believe wideawake has since expressed that sentiment.
I believe MOST of the expressions of dismay with the FL's comments were by people who were sincere and NOT anti-bush. I know I certainly am not.
Why does everything have to be a litmus issue? Can't people just disagree with the President or FL without being against them?
Yes., and it makes it difficult to take them seriously.
Funniest jokes I've heard in a long time !!!
Get over it libs!
You do know this was written by a comedy writer who wrote for Sr. Bush and Reagan; and rehearsed beforehand? Was a roast! Was not off the cuff.
Laura Bush will always impress this FReeper.
And you sink to personal insults.
Good show.
