Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

What a bunch of prune faced prudes! I'm assuming all of the correspondents are adults, were there 4 yr olds there? I heard it all the French were offended, but thought nothing of Bill and Monica. Rather selective! Go Laura!

"I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

I"ll bet he had no problem explaining Whoopi's jokes about President Bush last year to his 4 year old. What is a 4 year old doing up at 10:30 watching a political event, anyway?

These liberals are so hilarious. They're the ones who want "alternative lifestyles" taught to kindergartners and now they're all concerned about "family-values"?

It's true!

And there is much disagreement about where the line should be. She told an old farmer's joke. And it was really funny.

Oh, puhleese......this was late on a Saturday night at an adult function. If his four year old is up that late watching C-SPAN, he has other problems to deal with.

GET OVER IT!!!!!!

Honestly!

Mrs. Bush was at an adult function. No children were present. She has a sense of humor. I have a sense of humor. The president has a sense of humor. So did most of the people at the banquet.

Does Mrs. Bush have to wear a Sunday-school teacher hat at an adult function?

And the "milking the bull" joke is so old, my grandkids, all under 10, have heard it at school.

Pulllllleeeeeeeze....

Oh please. People have been making "milk the bull" jokes as long as there have been cows. This just sounds like the rancher's version of a farmer's joke.

Exactly right. Loosen up, folks. No four letter words were used, no one was insulted, except the President in a jovial manner.

Nonsense. They just played a clip of Laura on the radio and my 4-year old was in the room. I didn't hear a thing that made me feel uncomfortable. Some people need to loosen up a bit.

Al Franken in 1996 talked about how expendable retirees are with respect to NASA saving money on astronaut safety and sending them to fight North Korea, and Newt Gingrich's daughter's menstrual cycle.

Right.

Even FR runs a cartoon during telethons of a line of cows waiting to be milked (and a bull, grinning, standing in line).

Anyone with a rural background has heard/said those kinds of jokes.

What line did she cross? From the headline I thought she put on a top with spaghetti traps and slipped into some tight jeans and started singing "Redneck Woman" on the table tops.

I heard Bill Bennett hand wringing this morning about it.

I knew he would be hemming and hawwing about it so I didn't listen to him this morning. Get off the high horse Bill. There was nothing wrong with the "speech" it was a JOKE!!! Ha ha etc.

What a jerk. Since when are jokes from an adult dinner supposed to be explained to a 4-year-old.

Korn probably hates the fact that Laura received so much applause.

Ugly meanspirited haters on the left.

The people at the Nation are particularly scummy.

When I see that they are the source I immediately dismiss anything they write.

My don't we have a highly intelligent 4 year old. Kind of reminds me of my boss who brags his 2 year old is fluent in Spanish. I would not even discuss this with my 10-year-old daughter. What is the point????????????????????????????

Yeah but could you imagine if Hillary, Tipper or Ms. Ketchup said it? The outrage would have pooring through the threads. This one would have been longer thatn I signed up to get the Zot. Kristinn would have already set up a stage in Layfayette Park, had the permit ready to go, speakers lined up, the anti-beastiality groups lined up and a fund raiser to raise the $$ to get Jim there. As it is, a few upset and most saying, hey, it's a ranching joke.

I can see why they are upset, she is definitely no Whoopi Goldberg!

By the way, I thought she was hysterical. I would much rather explain why you don't milk a boy horse to a 4 year old, then what a lewinsky is.
