KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee offensive tackle Michael Munoz decided to quit football after he was not chosen in the NFL draft over the weekend, his father, NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz said Monday.

The All-American started 46 games in his career despite injuries, including a torn rotator cuff that ended his senior year before the Southeastern Conference championship game in December.

Now dear Mr. Munoz will have to go back to school and finish up those pesky classes he skipped in preparation for the multi-million dollar contract with the NFL. Classes like English 101, Soc. 101, Math (prep for General Math 101) and the like. Wonder how he'll like selling insurance?

FWIW, you'll often find that offensive linemen are the brightest guys on a football field. There's something about the repetitive drilling and intensive memorization of various blocking schemes that lends itself well to an academic setting.

The New York Giants team that won the Super Bowl in 1986-87 had an odd collection of professionals on their offensive line. From left to right, "The Suburbanites" as they were called, were as follows:

Brad Benson -- owned a car dealership, and was the only offensive lineman who did not have a professional degree
Billy Ard -- licensed stock broker, worked on Wall Street during the off-season
Karl Nelson -- industrial engineer
Bart Oates -- accountant and lawyer
Chris Godfrey -- lawyer (later became heavily involved with a pro-life group called LifeAthletes)

I see that once again some folks read the thread and some do not. Michael Munoz is a great young man, riddled by serious injuries that cut his playing days short. I wish him only the best in his chosen endeavors.

I can't locate his name in a web search, but the NCAA's leading scorer in mens' basketball in 1984 -- the year Michael Jordan went sixth in the NBA draft -- also went undrafted. Unlike Munoz, he didn't have anything to fall back on; he had skated through school on his athletic skills and teachers' reluctance to hold him back from surefire stardom. The NBA's rejection devastated him, and it began a steady slide back into the old neighborhood and bad habits. He eventually took his own life.

I respect you as a 'Nam vet and a fellow Air Force man. The conclusions of Michael as a typical jock is way off. A scholar athlete that excelled in college football despite the injuries and pain. Michael is a class act, as is his father (the apple didn't fall far from the tree).
