Confederacy of the determined - (Southern heritage buffs vow "Confederate History Month")
WASHINGTON TIMES.COM ^ | APRIL 24, 2005 | Christina Bellantoni

Posted on 04/24/2005 6:08:20 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.

"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."

Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.

Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.

In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."

Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.

Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

Kirk feels strongly that EVERYONE, even RACIST IDIOTS like the KKK, deserves effective legal counsel, when facing charges in court. he is, fwiw, NOT alone among lawyers in that belief

Perhaps. But that does not explain why he would have the founder of a white supremacist organization perform his marriage ceremony.

No. it would make him contractor or someone who is involved in the contracting business.

You're pretty facile at assuming stuff, aren't you?

He wouldn't necessarily be a contractor or someone involved in the contracting business. He might have been the venue's caterer, their bookkeeper, or a security operative. He might have been a passer-by, or a deacon hurrying to a christening at the apartment complex next door.

Anything works for you, if it puts dirt on a Southerner.

and your REPUTABLE, PRIMARY SOURCE for this allegation is????

Oh, how about a affidavit from Lyons himself, posted on his website?

"Our double wedding, performed by Pastor Richard G. Butler at the Church of Jesus Christ Christian, was planned for September 1, 1990 and the members of the SSCDA were invited. Deborah and two other ladies from SSCDA attended.  The ceremony was a traditional Scottish/Anglican wedding service."

Jeez, Watie. The least you could do is pick your battles better.

Even with Lyons' own public affidavit the neo-confederates will still defend this 'Lost Cause' type.

'Pastor' Richard G. Butler, (1918-2004), was an obsessed neo-Nazi.

PS. Saw a car with Illinois plates riding down the Interstate yesterday - it had a Confederate Battle flag in the rear window.

I guess the North isn't ate up with liberals.

"why was Kirk there?"

for PRECISELY the same reason as the ACLU lawyers = to provide legal counsel.

99% of lawyers will, imVho, work for anybody with the $$$$$$$ to pay them.

a FEW, Kirk included, will represent those W/O the ability to pay, provided that the person(s) cannot get competent counsel elsewhere.

i, for one, wish he did not feel so strongly about his principles, as i think the KKK-morons deserve only ABUSE!

I think Clinton rates in the bottom half of Presidents. So, no, he is not fit to hold the Great Emancipator's hat.

The Lincoln monument is one of the most visited places in this country. I bet it tears you up that your countrymen do not, and never will, share your view of Lincoln.

Does Kirk protect the free speech rights of any other groups, or just white supremacists?

I am a lawyer and most of my closest friends are lawyers. None of us would voluntarily represent the KKK.

What are you talking about? I've been a poster on here since 1998, much longer than you. I post under no other name but my own. I have never been banned from this site and, unlike you, I don't have to look under rocks for boggie men (or in this case, women) because I can't argue a point.

Nobody's asking you to pander, just asking you to have the common decency to keep quiet when you're at the memorial service of someone else's relatives.

This thread is asking the country to reserve a month to honor the confederate war dead. I am not at your relative's memorial. I live in the South and you have every opportunity to mourn your loss. You even have your own memorial day to pay your tributes. I am saying don't expect the nation to put aside a month, on top of it all, to honor your heroes. You already have your own separate memorial day, a month of national recognition just ain't in the cards.
