Bear-Mauling Victim Survives Rare Second Attack

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Scott MacInnes set an Alaskan record this week, although not one contenders would seek to break, by becoming the state's first person to survive two bear attacks, state officials said on Wednesday.

MacInnes, a 51-year-old biologist, was mauled during his early morning jog on Monday when he met up with a brown bear and one or two cubs near his home in the Kenai Peninsula town of Soldotna.

He had been mauled 38 years earlier on a well-used hiking trail in the Chugach National Forest, according to a government biologist.

"That's the only time in the history of the state that I have a record that anybody's been attacked twice," said Tom Smith, a bear biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey who keeps records of Alaska bear attacks dating to the late 1800s.

The presence of a dog and a food source, a freshly killed moose found nearby, made the bear more aggressive, said Bruce Bartley, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

"There's just hardly any other factors that could make it worse," Bartley said.

MacInnes was one of eight people in Alaska who had been attacked by bears while jogging, according to Smith's records. Including MacInnes' second attack, Smith's records recount 519 bear maulings in Alaska.

MacInnes' first bear attack in 1967 resulted in wounds on his legs and an injured arm, but he was able to walk a few days later.

Monday's attack, which took place about 60 miles southwest of Anchorage, appeared more serious, inflicting wounds on MacInnes' head, neck and abdomen. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Outside of Alaska, a Canadian man claims to have been attacked on two occasions by polar bears, Smith said

I understand your sentiments of love toward your weapon...I had so much fun with mine today! (more so than any date I have ever been on LOL) I was really impressed by how easy it was to place my shots! The conditions were less than peaceful...one scenario was done under low light conditions with a buzzer and an armed intruder that you had to take out. You were allowed a number of shots that were to be specifically placed, then reload and fire again. You were on a timer too.

The second scenario was at a restaraunt with innocents between you and the perps. You had to pull from concealed, fire a specific number of rounds at 3 perps, and hit only center mass and head shots. Each shot was counted, if you had an extra head shot and one less at center mass, you were deducted points, which affected your time.

I was very proud of my performance!! (can you tell) :)

My revolver has the black rubber style grips...is that the same as what you are talking about?

I didn't have to go to the link. I knew exactly what it would show. I saw it the first time it was posted FR. Once is enough.

I agree re shot placement - the extra inch of barrel (as compared to a snubby) makes a lot of difference.

I think we have different era Bulldogs - IIRC, the company went of business, and was revived a few years ago. Mine is from the first era - it came with a one-piece wooden grip, but the original owner added an aftermarket grip. It's not rubber - closer to foam-rubber.

Congrats on a GOOD day at the range!

As promised over in the chat room: here's SILLY, VIKING KITTY:

SILLY, Viking Kitty! As you can see from the pics she is a well qualified Viking Kitty. She eats jerky and "tries" to drink my beer, she's ornery, headstrong, and generally a pain in the butt!!! (Particularly when she's in heat and I won't let her outside!!!!) LOL

Silly - The Viking Kitty

In this photo we see Silly at the door when I say "Disruptor"
Silly immediately takes up her position on the desk and contemplates the "ZOT" button
Here, Silly decides that the "ZOT" is in order, and she reaches for the "ZOT" button
Here, Silly advises me of a successful "ZOT" operation.

The best reply from another thread on the same story --

Word gets around, even with bears. Apparently this guy's delicious.

I am the proud new owner of a Charter Arms, Bulldog .44 Special.

Good choice. Print this out and save it. It tells you why you are most likely missing the bullseye.

Thank you bad...

...do you think missing 3 times out of 50 is a bad thing? I really enjoyed myself at the self defense session! Most fun I have had in a long time! I saved that target and will print out several before I go back to the range.

I called the victim notification number to the Abilene prison tonight...found out the creep that has inspired all this preparation is coming up for parole this December. Six months before he was suppose to. Gotta call tomorrow and see when his hearing will be, so I can try to stop his release!

Nope, that's actually pretty good. Did they let you fire it single action (thumb the hammer back first) or did you fire double action (pull the trigger to operate the hammer)?

It was all double action. You had to try to be quick...you were timed.

Mic McPhearson (book author many times over) serviced my gun for me. He made the Double action trigger pull 3 pounds instead of the original 6. It felt very comfortable.

a Canadian man claims to have been attacked on two occasions by polar bears

This one I find hard to believe unless the fellow drove the bears off with high caliber gunfire. My impression from a lifetime of nature shows is that Polar Bears consider humans just another food source. In the case of Brown Bears (Grizzlies) most attacks seem to be the result of the bear having young or a food source (salmon or a recent kill) nearby. IIRC they are far more wary of humans than their all-white cousins.

Just found out last night that I have 6 months less to be ready...my attacker is coming up for parole 2 days before Christmas. :(

I hope he doesn't get out...he is a five time felony convict, but they seem to have a revolving door policy in Texas prisons. I have been trying to find online inmate information, but it looks like you have to pay to get that.

Thank you for the target!
