LAKEPORT, California (AP) -- An American activist who was killed by a car bomb in Iraq earlier this month was remembered Saturday for her dedication to humanitarian causes and her personal mission of counting civilian casualties of war.

Many of the more than 600 mourners, including friends, family, colleagues and journalists who traveled from around the world for her funeral, shared memories of Marla Ruzicka's boundless energy that helped her accomplish much in her 28 years.

Kevin Danaher, co-founder of San Francisco-based Global Exchange, a nonprofit international human rights organization, said Ruzicka's magic was understanding and showing unconditional love.

"That's why a 28-year-old woman from a small town in Northern California has so many people around the world grieving for her," Danaher said.

"Ruzicka traveled to Iraq before the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion and later founded a group called CIVIC, the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict, whose aim was to tally the number of Iraqi civilian deaths in the conflict. "

Of course, she had probably had no interest whatsoever in founding a group called "CIVOS", the Campaign for Innocent Victims Of Saddam, whose aim was to tally the number of Iraqi civilian deaths due to Saddam Hussein.

Ditzy anti-american blonde.

Of course CNN had to show that Sean Penn was at the funeral too.

Kind of reminds me of Rachel Corrie. Bull dozers and car bombs can eradicate earthly problems

Wonder if the bad guys are upset by their inadvertent killing of a willing idiot ally? Seeing as how most of them are criminal scum of the earth paid for by oil for food money and tyrannical Islamic regimes I doubt they even noticed.

Those bad, bad terrorists that killed her. I'll bet her family and friends are mad at those animals.

Wait? No? It's not the fault of the thugs who set the car bomb?

It's BUSH'S FAULT?

Someone needs to count Iraqi civilian casualties, as they are human beings. I'll defend that, but question why young liberal women naively risk their own lives in a war zone. This is no place for women. Many here won't mourn her passing, but she was obviously brave, and young women do change as they get older. Her activism doesn't mean she was serving as a shield for Hussein. She was genuinely concerned for Iraqi civilians and I don't fault her for that, as I share her concern. The difference between us is that I am not a leftist extremist without personal survival instincts and I don't demonize the soldiers sent to Iraq for doing as they were ordered.
Global Exchange, on the other hand, has been terrorizing this society with their advocacy of gay rights and illegal immigration. They have corrupted the minds of so many youth, who are otherwise intelligent and who could have made a difference for the better in this country, if not for the pinkos who took dominion over their impressionable minds.

I interpret this a little differently than you do. I think she genuinely believed she was in no danger, knowing that American troops DO try to limit civilian casualties, and also believing they would not target a fellow American. Nevertheless, she was there to collect propaganda fodder, and she was killed by those on whose behalf she wanted to propagandize. She wasn't brave, but incredibly dumb and naive.

Imagine what she could have accomplished if she had been volunteering in an Iraqi children's hospital, helping rebuild a house, etc., instead of trying to inflate casualty numbers for political purposes.

In other words, she'd spread her legs for anyone?

I can't make the judgement as to whether or not she personally was shielding anyone, trying to propagandize them, or whether or not she was intelligent. Some of the most intelligent, brilliant people I know are antisocial.
And I know many Americans went over the Kosovo during the war because they were angry because of Clinton's war. I consider them to be brave and selfless, but lacking personal survival instincts.
As for Americans limiting civilian casualties, I agree 100%.
For leftists to say they deliberately target them is nonsense.
