Shocker: Ted Kennedy's In-Law Spied on the Clintons
NY POST ^ | April 22, 2005 | DEBORAH ORIN and IAN BISHOP in D.C. & HOWARD BREUER in L.A.

Posted on 04/22/2005 2:34:20 AM PDT by Liz

Sen. Ted Kennedy's brother-in-law is the mystery witness who raised $100,000 for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and then went undercover and wore a wire to help the feds nab one of her top moneymen on charges of fund-raising-fraud, The Post has learned.

The witness, Ray Reggie, 43, has a sister, Victoria, who married Kennedy in 1992, and prosecutors say Reggie secretly recorded "incriminating" statements made by David Rosen, a top Clinton fund-raiser.

Reggie was close enough to Bill and Hillary Clinton to sleep over at the White House in 2000 and stay up chatting with the first couple into the wee hours.

Sources tell The Post that he is the "cooperating witness" — described but not named in recent court papers — and that he is likely to testify at Rosen's May 3 trial as part of a plea deal struck with federal prosecutors.

The well-connected Reggie stayed undercover for nearly 21/2 years, helping the feds on multiple probes, and was still wearing a wire and making secret tapes as recently as last December, federal documents show.

Reggie hobnobbed at the very top Democratic levels. A month after he'd raised $100,000 for Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign in 2000, Bill Clinton invited him to a state dinner for the king of Morocco — and a sleepover at the White House.

Reggie told The Times-Picayune of New Orleans that he and his wife later got a post-midnight knock on their bedroom door. The Clintons had come to chat.

Yesterday, Reggie, a Democratic campaign consultant who worked for both Clintons and for Al Gore, pleaded guilty in New Orleans to unrelated multimillion-dollar bank-fraud charges.

David Rosen's trial starts May 3. That is a true fact.

He's being charged, not HRC.

I do not know of any photo-op between President Bush and HRC except for the portrait unveiling last year.

I can't tell if "tend to" means orange juice and fresh coffee or "tend to" means something more, uh, "marital."

But, but, but....I'm NOT asking. ;OP

Here's my two cents FWIW. We know how much President respects the office of POTUS. It's sacred to him (as government related thing go).

I think the President knows there are some people pretty close to the Clintoons who are going to fall hard. In order to avoid having the Clintoons further stain the image of the office of the POTUS, he is cutting Slick a bit of slack and having the photo-ops with Poppy for a little presidential "image damage control". If you follow my thinking.

....this probe, investigation, prosecution...whatever you call it

Rosen's trial starts May 3. It's a prosecution.

........will never hurt either Clinton.

I agree, though in a just world the MSM would apply the "birds of a feather" principle to these dem politicians. Look how they contort themselves to make the most innocuous connection between a Republican and some wrongdoer taint the Republican just for saying hello to the wrongdoer a couple times.

~sigh~

#121..cyn, it was an honest, innocent question.

I'm not anti-Bush.....

My little peasize brain just can't keep up with the machinations of politics, and I was asking my two buddies if they could enlighten me, and I was pretty darn sure they could.

This is about her, I understand!

But she is still....last time I checked...married to him.

And MM's answer helped enlighten me :)

Background info/related stories:

08/24/04 – A HOLLYWOOD fundraiser who organised events featuring such celebrities as former US president Bill Clinton was today jailed for more than five years for fraud. Aaron Tonken, 38, was sentenced to 63 months behind bars after admitting fraudulently diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars destined for charity galas and using the cash to pay off his own credit card bills. <…snip…>During his time as a top fundraiser, Tonken helped arrange events for Mr Clinton and his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in August 2000. Tonken struck a secret plea deal with prosecutors that resulted in today's sentencing by US District Judge Dale Fischer in Los Angeles.

Hollywood Charity Man Jailed

04/19/04 - The Federal Election Commission has opened a formal probe into a star-studded Aug. 12, 2000 Hollywood fundraiser for then-first lady Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign, Fox News Channel reported on Sunday. And some say the development is at least partly responsible for Sen. Clinton's claim that she's not interested in joining John Kerry's presidential ticket.

The allegations themselves are not new: Two of the event's organizers, Hollywood producer Peter Paul and charity fundraiser Aaron Tonken, have detailed a series of transactions undertaken in conjunction with Hillary's campaign that could violate FEC regulations, with Paul charging that the campaign failed to report nearly $2 million he spent producing the event.

But months before Paul was returned to the U.S. to stand trial in the stock case, Hollywood fundraiser Aaron Tonken began cooperating with federal probers. Tonken has said that he's a star witness against the Clintons in a federal grand jury probe in New York into Mr. Clinton's Marc Rich pardon - and has been cooperating with the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles who's probing his fundraising activities.

FEC Heat Hurts Hillary's VP Chances

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton surely hopes that history isn't repeating itself with the raid conducted by the FBI last month on another warehouse; this one chock full of documents from her 2000 Senatorial campaign.

"The documents were seized in a May 30 raid of a California storage facility containing documents of Peter Paul, the entrepreneur who funded Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign with over $2 million dollars in direct, in-kind contributions which were never reported by Hillary Clinton or her Senate campaign, as required by law," revealed the public interest law firm Judicial Watch in a press release late last week.

FBI Raids Hillary's Warehouse in Whitewater Deja Vu

The Bush administration has quietly done an about-face on allegations that New York Sen. Hillary Clinton broke campaign finance laws in 2000 - with the Justice Department preparing to extradite one-time Clinton fund-raiser Peter Paul to the U.S. as part of a plea deal for his testimony. The sudden action on Paul's case comes just weeks after reports surfaced that former Hollywood fund-raiser Aaron Tonken has supplied damaging testimony about Hillary Clinton's fund-raising practices.

"I'm a star witness against President and Mrs. Clinton," Tonken claimed in a recent report on his case in Vanity Fair magazine, explaining that prosecutors wanted his testimony about" "fundraising activities that I've done on behalf of the Clintons." The exact nature of Tonken's allegations against Sen. Clinton remains secret, the magazine said. But the celebrity moneyman is known to have been involved in the August 2000 fund raiser that is at the heart of Peter Paul's allegations.

The End of Hillary Clinton

Peter F. Paul, the flamboyant Hollywood entrepreneur who says Hillary Rodham Clinton has hidden almost $2 million of in-kind contributions he made to her campaign in 2000, is back from Brazil and promising to raise a ruckus about the New York senator as he fights bizarre securities and bank-fraud charges on which he's been indicted. Aaron Tonken, a political operative in Hollywood and a former protégé of Paul under indictment for a variety of alleged sharp deals with the rich and famous, also is promising to tell everything he knows about behind-the-scenes shenanigans of Clinton and many others.

Clintons' Fall Guy May Turn the Tables (Peter Paul)

Mr. Paul has substantial, documentary evidence detailing his close relationship with the Clintons and his funding of the Hollywood tribute, including cancelled checks, hand-written thank you notes from the Clintons, and photographs. Also named in the complaint is Clinton fundraiser David Rosen, Clinton friend James Levin, and Hollywood celebrity fundraiser Aaron Tonken, who currently is under criminal investigation for his role in other Hollywood fundraisers. As a result of Mr. Paul’s disclosures, federal authorities have launched an investigation into the Clintons and other matters. Mr. Paul, who is facing alleged (and related) stock and bank fraud charges, remains eager to cooperate with federal authorities.

This is one of those situations where you might as well laugh as to cry. The Clintons compromised so many people that they will forever be inoculated, in this world at least, from paying a personal penalty for anything they have done or will do. It is good tho that the public gets an occasional reminder of how corrupt the Clinton administration was. Just maybe it will influence public thinking away from giving them another turn at controlling the wheel of government via a president Hillary.

The Cineros probe, which has morphed into a Clinton-misuse-of-the-IRS
scandal, is the one that Dick Morris (consider the source)says may actually
really hurt the Clinton's. That's why the dems (with RINO help) are sneaking
around and trying to shut it down.

Good news, but it'll probably lead to just about every other news the clintons seem to generate...... zip, zero, nada as far as they go. They don't call him slick willy for nothing, and she's slicker. I'm just being a realist.

But I do look for the NY AG to take the clintons place in a couple of years.....
