Tyson, in his absolute prime, would have beaten anyone.
Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations (i.e. The Baby Boomers) are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

When Mike Tyson Ruled The World
Mmmmmm, must have been out with a cold that day and missed it.
You got that right. Cus D'Amato said that he hit with bad intentions. Tyson used to destroy his opponents.
He was never the same after Cus passed away. The rest is history.
Didnt Tyson decide at some time he didnt need Cus D'amato and thats started his slide?
I guess McBride needs the money , no way anyone should enter the ring with Tyson until he pulls all his teeth.
I think D'Amato dies before tyson made it to the top.
dies = died
He really was one tough sob. He was his own undoing. A good lesson for us all. I'm sure D'Amato told him as much.
And he was pretty damn dumb previously.
No. Tyson's slide happened after Cus passed away. After Kevin Rooney was fired as his trainer, a trainer who worked with Mike under D'Amato, his career went to hell.
Don King. Robin Givens. The rest is history.
Tyson simply doesn't have it up here.
Tyson has said that Cus used to tell him "there are animals out there disguised as people and you aren't smart enough to sort them out"
Cus was a pretty smart man...
During the 80's I never missed a Tyson fight. My friend, having a cable descrambler helped save us a lot of money :)
I was at a keg party at U-mass during the Douglas fight and i figured I'd rather hang near the beer in the basement then bother watching Tyson destroy another opponent in 90 seconds. My mistake! Shortly after some kid came running downstairs screaming "Tyson lost!" nobody believed him and they threw empty keg cups at him.
I just caught that fight last week on ESPN classics. What a sad end to a great fighter.
I still believe his wife had him on anti-depressants or something at the time. he seemed pretty lethargic.
You and I must not be thinking of the same Mike Tyson. Like the article said, in the late 80's most people would have guessed Tyson would go on to be the greatest heavyweight ever.
You said it. Desoite my not being a boxing fan, he was one of those boxers whose skill projected his name and fame beyond the community of fans; for a long time, he was the standard agaist which others were judged.
Desoite=Despite
"...he was one of those boxers whose skill projected his name and fame beyond the community of fans..."
Your answer describes it best.
I am not a real boxing fan and have no expertise, but it doesn't take much to recognize the skills he once had.
The last time I paid or watched HBO was when Tyson was boxing for them. That was a long time ago. Mike Tyson still scares me though. My memories of him were when he was crushing the world in the first round.
My most memorable Tyson moment occurred when Spinks took the dive after 90 seconds.
