PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady are spending the weekend at Camp David, and there are no planned public appearances. President and Mrs. Bush reported total income last year of $784,219 and paid $207,307 in federal income taxes, according to documents released by the White House on April 15, 2005. Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne reported $1.3 million in taxable income, the White House said.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

Monday, the President will go to Columbia, South Carolina, where he'll make remarks on strengthening Social Security.

Tuesday, the President will go to Springfield, Illinois, where he will tour the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and then make remarks at the dedication of the library and museum. Also on Tuesday, the Vice President will deliver the keynote address at the Oklahoma City National Memorial ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building there.

Wednesday, the President makes remarks to the 2005 National and State Teachers of the Year in the Rose Garden. And then he'll make remarks at the U.S.-Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Legislative Conference. Those remarks will be on energy, as I mentioned. The President will then present the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the United States Naval Academy football team in the East Room.

Thursday, GWB will make remarks on strengthening Social Security to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America in Washington. He'll also make remarks at the President's Environmental Youth Awards in the East Garden.

Friday, the President will participate in a service project. And then he'll make remarks on Earth Day. And both those events are in Townsend, Tennessee. Then he goes on to the ranch in Crawford, where he'll remain for the weekend.

THE FOLLOWING WEEK: On Monday the 25th, the President will meet with Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at the ranch. And then on Tuesday, he will go to Galveston to participate in a roundtable on strengthening Social Security. This event had been postponed because of the Pope's funeral.

My father refers to the "Dose" as "The back yard fence". His "very big backyard" is getting larger and larger as it spreads through new friends across the sea.The world is growing smaller and smaller..... A retired preacher (in his 80s)from our church is doing "missionary" work in China and the ME through his internet contacts......

These Cheney pictures are just wonderful. I agree with you about how nice it is to see how they don't waste clothes or money.

Back to the original guess. It has to be Elizabeth. Besides, looking at her arms in the picture, I believe a six-year old (Kate) would have longer arms than that.

I still say from looking at photos that Elizabeth is an imp and knows how to work her granddad to the max! So adorable, both of them.

Snugs, I don't know if your newspapers reported it (and this has nothing to do with the wonderful campaign photos you posted but does have to do with Dubya's incredible memory for people - faces and names) but when the Prez visited the dugouts - or maybe it was the locker rooms of the two teams at Thursday night's opening game for the Nationals, before one of the players on the team could introduce himself, the President recognized him, remember hiring him for the Rangers, and then where he traded him to - and said something like "that wasn't a good trade" meaning that he felt they'd traded a "good guy" that they should have kept!!!!

Likewise, on the rope line, either Thursday or Friday - at the White House South lawn, when people are given tickets to show up and wave at the President, as he was passing to or from Marine1, he recognized Luiz Gonzalez and his wife from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He went right over to the rope line, saw another teammate and his wife, called them by name - and invited them in for a tour of the Oval Office!!!!! NO newspaper reported this - I heard it on the game yesterday afternoon, when one of the announcers mentioned how gracious the President was, and "what a fantastic memory he has" and of course, how the players thought it was spectacular that he gave the baseball players a personal tour of his office!!!

Not only does he love people, but the President has been gifted with an extraordinary memory for people's names and faces, and he uses it, whereas so many people can't be bothered.....except for "people important to them" when they can "do" something for them later. This President remembers everybody!

I LOVE this President!

I'm not surprised he knew Luis G, since Luis campaigned for and with him in Arizona and elsewhere, I'm pretty sure. No doubt Luis helped him win the Hispanic vote.

Still your point is correct, the man must have an incredible memory for people. Like the rest of us, he remembers what he's interested in better, so it may be no surprise that baseball players are especially memorable to him.

Snugs, I don't know where you found that "portrait" of Spotty, but it is the best pic of her I've ever seen.

She was such a cutie, wasn't she?

I have to admit, for whatever reason I'm not sure, I'm a bigger fan of ol' Barn and Beezie than I ever was of Spotty.

I had a Cocker Spaniel that I inherited from my sister, and it was the nastiest dang dog - would snap at any of my friends, and I had to take care of it for way too long before I could finally get my own dog. The Cocker basically never recuperated from beng "abandoned" by my sister who had gotten that dog. Maybe something about Spotty reminded me of that Cocker - I don't know. Certainly, Barney beig black should remind me more of the Cocker - but Barney and Beezie have such wonderful personalities. I know - Spotty did, too.

It's funny how dogs appeal to us and why.

I look at a Beagle and am reminded of the one that my sister got for her children, who tore at the children's clothes and how I hated that thing. Haven't been able to look at a Beagle since, and not think nasty thoughts about it!

Meanwhile, Scotties, Poodles, Lhasa Apso and Shih Tsu's? Love them on sight but glad I don't own one, for the grooming must be severe. It sure was bad enough with that Cocker!

I'm thinking about getting a Canary after I've moved. I've missed mine ever since I had to leave mine behind when I moved back from Spain!!

We'll see.

I had not heard about him recognizing the ex Texas Rangers player but I did read somewhere about him seeing Luiz Gonzalez on the rope line but not that he invited him to tour the Oval Office.

He does have a great memory plus also a great way of dealing with people and showing genuine interest. I am sure it is helped by the fact it is baseball but IMHO that is only part of the story he genuinely does care about ordinary people.

The picture of Spot came from the White House website I just did a search of Spot Photograph and that was the first one on the list. It is a beauty I am certain Wolfstar with her great love of dogs will adore it.

I have always wanted a cocker spaniel but practicalities of care and hair everywhere I don't think I will ever have one. I have a friend who has black and one like Spot.

Best of luck with the canary I a budgie fan myself.

Yes I think you are right it is Elizabeth and yes I bet she is a real little imp full of fun and mischief and I bet she keeps her grand parents on their toes.

I love the story of how she was concerned about the tooth fairy getting past the security at Naval Observatory to present her with some coins for her tooth. Shows a natural reaction in an abnormal situation it shows that despite being in the spot light most of her young life she still is able to be a normal little girl.

Regarding wrapping their little fingers round granddad I think Grace does a fair amount of this too. In an interview I think a couple of years ago Lynne said that one of her funniest incidents with Gracie was that one day she bought her back to the Naval Observatory and there was no sign of the VP upon their arrival. Apparently Grace stood in the middle of the hall way and shouted at the top of her voice "Wheres Dick, I want Dick".

There is the other story Lynne never said which one it was but one of them asked Dick if he knew anyone famous almost as though they did not really think of him as famous. It shows how in amongst of the circus that they live in somehow they have managed to give these children as normal a childhood as possible even down to camping in their grand parents room at night with sleeping bags on the floor with the dogs. Sleep over at the grand parents.

Lynne also admitted that Dick is the soft one when interviewed on inauguration day by IMUS and said that the grandchildren always know they can get round their grandpa if they want something to eat after supper. Apparently he can always be persuaded to peel and cut them up an apple or pop corn for them certainly a doting granddad with granddaughters that obviously know how to tug on his heart strings.

Dick Cheney is by far the most significant vice president in modern American history. In fact, in the entire sweep of our history, other than the VP's who went on to become president, I can't think of another VP whose impact was as significant as Dick Cheney.

If he had done nothing else in his entire life except to command the WH crisis center so magnificently on 9/11/01, Dick Cheney would be a giant among our VP's. But he has done much more. So I think it would be a genuine loss to our historical record if he didn't write a memoir or autobiography.

He doesn't need personal notes or a diary, because so much of what our presidents and vice presidents do is recorded both for legal reasons and for posterity. I also suspect the most significant events are burned into his mind. So I hope he does write a book after he leaves office.
