Store Clerk, 64, Sorry She Had To Shoot Robber
POSTED: 7:04 am EDT April 15, 2005 UPDATED: 11:31 am EDT April 15, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A hooded gunman may have thought the older, female clerk would be an easy mark as he entered a convenience store, weapon blazing and demanding money.
But he wasn't counting on Janet Grammer, who was filling in for the regular clerk. The 64-year-old mother of 10 and former security guard pulled a gun from under the cash register and began shooting, hitting the would-be robber in the chest.
"I think he thought I was an old woman and would just give him the money," Grammer said Friday, recalling Thursday afternoon's shooting at the Apple Gate Food Store. "I think I scared the hell out of him."
"I thought he was getting ready to shoot me in the head," Grammer said. "So, I shot him in the chest. My life was at stake, I thought he was going to kill me."
The gunman, whose name has not been released, was being treated at Shands Jacksonville hospital Friday with a gunshot wound to his chest. Ken Jefferson, a police spokesman, said the man faces robbery charges once he recovers.
Grammer was just watching the store Thursday afternoon while the regular clerk had gone to doctor's appointment when the gunman entered the store.
"He came in with a hood over his head, waving his gun and hollering to give him all the money," said Grammer.
"He fired two shots in the back wall," Grammer said. "He had the biggest damn gun I have ever seen." Police told her it was a .357-caliber Magnum.
She pulled out a .38-caliber pistol from under the cash register and fired once.
The wounded man fell to the floor, dropped his gun and his hat, got up and ran for the door, leaving a trail of blood. Grammer fired two more shots at the fleeing man.
According to the sheriff's report, a man fitting the suspect's description went to the Orange Park Medical Center in a Jacksonville suburb a short time later with a gunshot wound to the chest. He told doctors that he shot himself.
He was later transferred to Shands Jacksonville hospital.
Grammer, who also has 32 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, said she worried that she had killed the would-be robber.
"You never want to kill anybody. All I could think about was his poor parents," Grammer said.
Grammer has experience with guns after working 10 years as a security guard in Charleston, S.C.
"But I never had to shoot anybody," she said. "I'm sick over it. It was very upsetting. I'm not feeling real perky."
"The good Lord had to be with me," she said.
"Grammer, who also has 32 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren..."
Damn, all at the age of 64? That's an oldschool family... kind of like my Welsh ancestors!
Hell yeah!
Score one for our side! Gotta love it!
Don't mess with no pistol packin' MawMaw!
Good shooting grandma.
"The gunman, whose name has not been released...".
Wonder why?
When I got my Texas CCW permit half the class was female and half of those were blue-haired grannies. Humourous to see them on the firing line. I thought then that there are some tough-guy wannabes out there that are in for a shock if they think they are an easy mark.
Grandma Grammer nails one center mass. Go, granny, go.
Hip, Hip Hooray, Granny!
The key here is that the robber shoot off two rounds after he entered the store. If he had just brandished the weapon and she shot him, I pray the new law allowing folks to defend themselves would have applied. These days, there are so many judges that don't allow folks to defend themselves.
>>Damn, all at the age of 64? That's an oldschool family..<<
Heh, heh. Of course it's old school. Her defending herself with a gun proves that. 8^>

Good follow-through on tryin' to finish the job, Grammy! :)
Granny deserves a peeerade and a medal for doing such good work----and can someone get word to her to not feel bad? She saved someone else by making her move when her number came up
Don't mess with no pistol packin' MawMaw!
That's the truth!! Can't help but think of Dirty Harry --
"Do ya feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
Maybe the next punk will stop and think before he does something like this -- "Is that gray-haired ol' granny packin' heat??"
"The gunman, whose name has not been released...".
Wonder why?

Illegal Alien? Any bets? DOH!!!
You got shot by a what?! A 64 year old great grandmother? And one shot too!
His buddies must be laughing themselves to death.
Love how the pull quote has little to do with her bravery in standing up to a thug.
God bless this lady -- 2nd Ammendment or death, folks.
