[Westfield, NJ] -- Gay jokes by his high school classmates always troubled Rob Santucci. But when another student said "all gays should be put on a raft and exiled," he decided to take action.
Santucci, a senior at Voorhees Regional High School in Hunterdon County, founded a gay-straight alliance group at his school in September called Students Making Advancements for Respect and Tolerance, or SMART.

While common on college campuses, gay-straight alliances at high schools are growing in number, according Joshua Lamont, spokesman for the New York-based Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.
Lamont said there are at least 106 high school gay-straight alliance organizations in New Jersey, and 24 of those groups were founded in the past year. Nationally, the number of high schools with gay-straight alliance groups has jumped from about 500 five years ago to nearly 3,000 today, he said.
Lamont credits the growth to the recent national debate over legalizing gay marriages and the highly publicized killing in 1998 of Matthew Shepard, a gay Wyoming college student.

The Voorhees group meets most Thursday afternoons. At a recent meeting, the group decided to host a movie night and debated the merits of films such as "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," "Birdcage," "Boys Don't Cry," "Philadelphia" or "The Laramie Project." In the end, "The Laramie Project" -- which sheds light on the murder of Shepard -- won the popular vote.

What the heck does this mean? It's doublespeak.
The National Day of Silence is Wednesday, April 13th.
When I grew up, we didn't put up with gays. And you know what, it probably had a significant effect on lots of people who could have gone either way.
There is nothing good to say about the gay lifestyle. They play havoc with demographics. They play havoc with children. Their promiscuity is legendary, and they certainly seem to commit a disproportionate share of sexual crimes against children.
While it's never acceptable to be violent towards anyone, for any reason, going out of our way to make these people feel accepted by society is also not acceptable (to me, at least).
Encouraging tolerance = encouraging homosexuality.
As a male high school student, I've been very vocal against this type of club, for I see it as promoting homosexuality in schools. The Gay - Stright Alliance at my school has a handfull members and they openly "express" their dirty ways for everyone to see, instead of staying in the closet. IMO they should'nt "come out" if they cant handle the ridicule that will follow. Untill my freshman year i could have cared less, that was untill one grabed my arse in the hallway.

That's sexual harassment...you should report it.
I bet. I wonder Rob the crusader has a secret?
This happened in my freshman year, now I'm a junior. After a few events I had in middle school, I'm not adpt to running to the school administration for anything. I have found they tend to compound the situation by bringing in too many people and ends with me getting upset with them for the weeks of "counciling on the conflict" by the guidance department.
What a Nancy Boy.
Agreed, Rob needs to "butch up" if he ever wants to survive in the real world.

The reporter misheard him. The last line was:
"We advocate amoral value -- we want kids to feel safe and respected."
"Battle bigotry" sounds so righteous. But I don't think that's what these groups are battling.
The straight students tho, cannot have a day of steady chatter to promote good will for their preferences,
Wow. If it only gets to an inch when it's angry, no wonder they hate life.
Notice how the homosexuals do not use GLSEN or GSA in their articles in the manner they used to.
they have adapted to going stealth in order to conceal their activities. Even to the point of adopting new acronyms in order to conceal.
GSA's have no place in school they are ONLY about recruiting children to recreational sex and normalizing homosexual sex.
Any mother or father who allows their child to enter these so called "clubs" is guaranteeing their children be marked for abuse.
We can only hope for silence from the homosexual addicts ...
The Matthew Shepard incident was a drug deal gone bad. All the men involved in that incident were dopers. His gayness had nothing to do with it. But don't tell the professional gays that.
