Missing UNC board nominees surprise GOP [Dems get 8 new board members, Republicans get 0]

RALEIGH, NC --Senate Republicans are complaining about a late vote Wednesday that appointed eight members to the UNC Board of Governors.

When ballots were handed out on the floor of the Senate, eight names [all dems nominees] appeared for eight open slots -- a surprise to Republicans who had sponsored four additional candidates.

Senate leaders, all Democrats, said the other four had withdrawn and rules prevented their names from appearing on the ballots.

Republicans, including Sen. Neal Hunt of Wake County, said they knew of no withdrawals of the people they sponsored. Most objected strenuously.

The row caused Sen. Robert Pittenger, the assistant Republican leader, to release a statement blasting the process.

"There is greater freedom in the Russian Duma, National People's Congress in China and the Iraqi Congress than what we experienced today in the N.C. state Senate," he said.

This is the same university that requires incoming freshman to read the Quran.

Yeah. I think a pattern may be developing. (I believe the article refers to the Board of Governors of the entire system, though.)

Didn't we have a post yesterday saying that a disgusting, corrupt leftist Democrat is being appoint head of the whole system? It looks like they'll have a clean sweep, and be well on their way to demolishing any shreds of excellence that remain in the UNC system.

I have a couple of friends on the faculty at NCSU. It looks as if they will soon be the last real teachers left standing. Everyone else in their department is a dumbed-down, politically correct brain washer.

There are a number of Marxists operating at North Carolina State; perhaps the most visible is Gregory A. Dawes, Associate Prof who who teaches Latin American literature and history.

Why isn't the NCGOP outraged over this turn of events?

Because they fear they might lose votes if someone in some newspapaer somewhere calls them "mean-spirited," "extremist," or "partisan."

Because they think that if they play nice with the Dems, they'll get invited to better parties.

Because they think if they play nice, the news media will write nice things about them.

Because they take their cues from the Senate Republicans in DC.

All of the above.

Personally, I'd like a university that requires the Quran to be read... along with Das Capital and Mein Kampf... and the Bible... and the Bahagava Ghita....

The problem isn't that students have to read this stuff, the problem is the spin they're required to regurgitate to get a good grade.

Hey I'm not complaining about the UNC Board of Governors too much, for the moment at least. That's going to take a long time to change. First things first. Get our State Senators to vote no on the lottery. Then go after this issue

I agree. On matters like this , my position has consistently been that students can't learn 'too much' - that is, they certainly won't be the worse for wear for reading the Quran, Maya Angelou, or any other source that isn't conventionally western.

The main problem is that in order to make room for 'nontraditional' (by western standards) materials, a lot of good stuff gets junked. Less of the Bard, for example. Less Samuel Johnson & Dr. Swift. Less Mark Twain.

In the worst cases, none of the above.

So to the extent a multicultural approach adds to the giants of western thought, I have no problem with it. To the extent that the giants get cut out for the sake of the midgets, then I have a problem with it.

Secondly, I agree that a problem is that the students are required to regurgitate the fringe stuff to get a good grade. Indeed, I work with recent college grads and graduate students, and they consistently think of themselves as bright, 'outside the box' critical thinkers, but in fact their analytical skills are horrible and they show a remarkable lack of knowledge, despite their insistence that they have a 'well rounded' education.

To be fair, they have wonderful self esteem.
