Some have proposed the addition of thousands of new Border Agents,and the deployment of Global Hawk surveillance drones to combat the increasingly burdensome tide of "undocumented residents" (illegal aliens) flowing across our borders-especially our border with Mexico.
I think it would be cheaper in the long run to construct adequate detention facilities near the border(s),so that those captured by the Border Patrol could be held for a few days (or weeks) until they could be "re-patriated".
I would also add more Hearing Officers,and have them set up shop right inside the detention facilities.
My home county did this (they called it "have gavel,will travel")and it was an enormous success: There was no need to assign deputies and vehicles to transport detainees to court (unless the detainee was actually going to trial).
Lawyers actually had greatly improved access to their clients. Case backlogs were cut to a fraction of what they had once been.Security,it goes without saying,was terrific !
The present system,in which the detainee is given an appearance ticket and released,seems much of the reason for the immigration problem: 85% of those so released never come back for their hearings !
Deal with the immigrant "forthwith": have him/her loaded on a bus for Mexico before the expectant can give birth,and before the border crosser can vanish into the American heartland !
It would cost a lot less than thousands of new Border Agents ,and /or fleets of Global Hawks,and would probably be a lot more effective.
This assumes,of course,we as a nation are willing to do something useful about the problem; that we actually consider it a problem.
I've heard it said-by people from the Left,the Right,and the Mainstream-Corporate America does not consider illegal aliens a problem:it considers them "bounty from Heaven" , and will fight tooth and nail to maintain access to low-cost,non-union labor...at taxpayer expense .
If this is true,and BOTH parties are dancing to this tune,we might just as well tear down the fences,send the Border Patrol home,and wait for the inevitable.
What moat? It will be called a canal, but let's build it in Mexico at the narrow part around Tehuantapec fund it completely. Hire Mexicans and Mexico to build it, and have a reason for mexicans to stay in Mexico. I'll bet we would come out ahead of where we are now. When the canal is done, we get part of the profits, and money now spent in Panama helps our southern problem child.
We need to claim all Mexican territory within 20 miles of our border as our "security zone" so they don't even reach our soil.
I suggest we outsource the patrols to India. And build the detention centers in Mexico. Just the contruction work alone would be a bigger boost to the Mexican economy than anything Vincente Fox has ever done.
If there is a REAL LABOR shortage, cut some of the silly child labor laws and let our whiney teenagers start earning their way through life instead of sitting around getting in trouble until they are 18! It could boost the economy and cut the vandalism, petty crimes etc...
First, EOs apply only to the Executive Branch of the federal govt.
Second, an EO to the Treasury Dept preventing release of funds is called "Impoundment" and it is illegal. If Congress appropriates the money, the prez has to spend it.

Never be allowed---too destructive of wildlife (non human, that is) that passes back and forth across the border. The eco-freaks would sue to keep it from being done.
Yes, that is an objective of Congress and the President, except larger.
We know that there are limitations to what we can do with interdiction forces located only within our borders. Were we able to operate on both sides of the border we would be much more effective.
Mexico has resisted this based on sovereignty issues. They have, however, indicated that if we were to reform our immigration policies, they would permit such operations.
This is shown in the Rice's statements during her trip to Mexico and the recent meeting in Crawford when North American Perimeter security was discussed.
It would be safe to assume that if US interdiction forces were operating in Mexico, it would simmilar to interdiction operations in Columbia.
Hmmm, perhaps you can explain why congress has been able to blackmail so many states into adopting federal "suggestions" as state laws?
Age of consent, DUI threshold, Speed limits, etc.?
The do this by threatening to withhold funds from the states unless they adopt the "suggestion" by a set date, usually starting with federal highway funds.
Either this is legal, or the current administration is guilty of some of the same crimes Klintoon was fond of.
Legal or not this blackmail and it's destruction of states rights has always disgusted me, no matter who was doing it.
Since it remains common practice, I would at least like to see it used to reduce the alien invasion.

Can someone tell me why we don't just stop them from transferring money back to the old country?
I know they are being encouraged to use banks now but they used to use money orders. In this day and age it shouldn't be that hard to separate the legitimate business money transfers from those sending money back home to their families.
This would remove the motive for even being here of nearly all of the newly arrived. Also one heck of a lot cheaper than military, detention centers, landmines, fining employers etc.
I keep asking this question and no one replies.
In wy mind, this implies that there has to be a top to bottom shake-up in Mexican society. Since we have difficulty bringing about changes in the US with our elections and economic system (big government continues to grow almost exponentially and they stick their snouts into all areas of our life), I don't expect to see many changes in old Mexico.
I guess the practical solution is to learn Spanish and / or Mexican so you can talk with your neighbor. For a preview of coming attractions, visit a McDonalds in Florida sometime.

I'm with you. President Bush says that illegal immigrants are here "to do the jobs that Americans won't do". He leaves out the rest of the sentence - "for the price that their employers are willing to pay."
From a skeezy employer's point of view, hiring an illegal immigrant is a win-win. No need to pay minimum wage. No need to ensure job safety. No need to give benefits like health insurance. No need to meet hourly work laws, or pay overtime. If the worker doesn't like it, you can fire him and he can't take action. And if he starts to make trouble, well, turn him in to the INS.
And because these immigrants make so little, they end up living thirty to a house, swapping mattresses in shifts. And the landlords that rent the houses don't bother to maintain fire safety rules, so the residents end up overloading electrical circuits or plugging broken windows with rags and paper. Fire hazards, vermin incubators, strains on water and sewage lines. The kids of the immigrants are born here on the public's health dime, and are citizens, so they end up being educated in ESL classes, driving up tax costs.
It's when we start to make the Americans that exploit these illegal immigrants start paying the fines that illegal immigration will slow. As long as these poverty-stricken folks from outside the borders think that they can make money here, they will move to where the jobs are.
If you fine the employers and landlords that wink their eyes at their illegal employees and renters, then you can dry up the demand. But to build an even more expensive holding facility? That's like trying to stop the sun from rising.
You said the magic word: Congress.
