Excellent......A step at a time!!
I don't like his name.
Kinda like if "Explosiony Jihadiguy" was named President.
Extraordinary BTTT!!!
hahah yes..the whole Talabani reminds me of Talaban
More History being made
Yay!
Jalal Talabani
haha! The Taliban. Same here. :)
Meanwhile in his cell, watching on TV, Saddam twists slowly in the wind.
Which is the greater torture, undies on your head or watching on TV the spectacular success of those who put you in prison?
BAGHDAD, Iraq Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani (search) was sworn in as interim president of Iraq on Thursday, capping a career spent opposing ousted dictator Saddam Hussein (search). He and his two vice presidents, also sworn in, were expected to name Shiite Arab Ibrahim al-Jaafari (search) as interim prime minister.
The long-awaited events will give Iraq its first freely elected government in 50 years, and its second set of interim leaders since the U.S.-led invasion. Once the Cabinet is finalized likely sometime next week the new government will begin working on drafting a permanent constitution.
The president's council made up of the president and his two deputies, all of whom were chosen the prior day was expected to name al-Jaafari to the government's top post Thursday.
Al-Jaafari's rise to the prime minister's job further consolidated the power shift in Iraq, where both the Shiite Arab majority and the Kurdish minority enjoy newfound power after decades of brutal oppression under Saddam's Sunni-dominated regime.
Shiites have a majority of seats in the National Assembly, while Kurds have the second largest bloc. Sunni Arabs have disproportionately few seats, largely because many boycotted the Jan. 30 elections or stayed home for fear of attacks at the polls.
Al-Jaafari spent more than two decades in exile, mostly in Britain and Iran, helping to lead anti-Saddam opposition forces in the Islamic Dawa Party (search), Iraq's first Shiite Islamic political party. He also has close ties to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani (search), Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric. Al-Jaafari's wife is a distant relative of al-Sistani's.
And the fact that he's Kurdish must make it hurt all the more
Dee-lightful.
A GREAT moment in history................for which we can thank our "cowboy, unilateralist" President Bush!
Great post! It is exciting watching history being made. What a great time to be alive!
extremely funny.
Love the name. Maybe those who don't speak Kurdish thought he was a Taliban.
I wonder if this takes some of the pressure off the Turks? The Turks have never been too happy with the Kurds on their southern border. However, with the Kurds empowered in Iraq, they will be much less interested in movement and power in Turkey[?Guess?].
It was because of the Kurdish situation that the Turks would not let U.S. forces invade Iraq from the north.
Anybody who knows the area please jump in here with your own speculation.
Don't encourage him KR......
Excellent news.
