WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Blacks lag far behind whites in economic status, health and education and are in danger of "a great backslide" from the gains made since the civil rights movement began, the National Urban League said on Wednesday.
"This year ... almost every indicator available shows that progress for black America is stalling or falling," said Marc Morial, the league's president, at a briefing to release the group's annual Equality Index.
The index found the overall status of blacks in the United States stayed at 73 percent of the status their white counterparts have, virtually unchanged from the 2004 report.
Despite this apparent stability, Morial said, "No one should take that to mean black America has simply stood still in terms of the equality gap. To stand still in today's world is to fall further behind."
The widest disparity for blacks remains economic, where African-Americans have 57 percent of the economic status of whites.
In the area of social justice -- how people are treated by the criminal justice system -- the status of blacks fell to 68 percent from 73 the previous year.
Forty years after the 1965 Voting Rights Act enabled many blacks to vote for the first time, Morial applauded their economic gains but worried about erosion of rights.
He said the black middle class has quadrupled in size, the African-American poverty rate has been cut in half and there are more black doctors, lawyers, business owners and elected officials than ever before.

My thoughts exactly. How does one measure how one is "treated by the criminal justice system?" If you are convicted of a crime is that a point against? And what does it mean to have fallen from 73% to 68%? Of what? I don't get it.

Those things come in a rule I have yet to write.
That study was comparing people of equal educational status and job description.
Blacks are more likely to be high school drop-outs, unwed parents, and alcohol or drug abusers than whites or Asians.
Blacks are 13% of the population. Of that less than 6% are adult black males.
That 6% accounts for 65% of all violent crime.
One out three black males are either in jail or on parol.
Black females are about 7% of the population as well...and account for 47% of all welfare and 37% of all abortions.
Blacks are involved in 75% of drug related crime.
80% of all black births are out of wedlock.
64% of all black 4th graders cannot read, even after $150 billion invested in "head start" early development programs.
Enough money has been spent since 1965 on black oriented programs and welfare to make EVERY BLACK person in the United States a millionaire several times over. The estimate is close to 5 trillion dollars.
The result of all that taxpayer investment...a race of perpetually disgruntled people who constantly demand more handouts, more programs, less attention to their shortcomings, and special reparations for being related to a slave 200 years ago.
I once asked a successful educated black friend of mine if it was true that if a black person strived to become educated and worked hard he was considered 'acting white' and an 'Uncle Tom'. He said yes.

The liberal press and their counterparts in academia will never acknowlege that the world is becoming a better place. If blacks reached parity with whites in every socio-economic measure there would still be a "crisis" in the eyes of organizations such as the National Urban League. This is unfortunate for those who work so hard to get ahead. They get none of the attention, it all goes to those poor people whom we pay to be poor.

Most of us are sick and tired of hearing about something that happened 400 years ago constantly used as a crutch or as an excuse for poor performance today, bad behavior, and a lack of respect for authority and the rule of law. It's time for blacks to get on with their lives and quit making excuses. Every other nationality and race that comes to this country become very sucessful because of hard work and self determination. Blacks are the only groups in this country that blames everybody else for their own failures and refuses to recognize their own shortcomings. Time to get off of the guilty white liberal kick, it just doesn't fly anymore.
Do most of you realize slavery did not end 400 years ago? do most of you realize blacks were kept out of some state schools to 40 years ago? maybe before most of you at whitepower.com get sick of hearing something you should count from the time it ended not the time it began. Most freepers are smart enough to realize nearly half a Milena of slavery can effect the base a culture has to build from..

Sry spunky, I have no guilt over slavery, I in no way profited from it. I do realize that there are long term affects to long term oppression. Only in the past 15 years has Ireland recovered from the English and its been close to a century..

Whenever somebody says something that you don't want to hear about minoritories, in particular, blacks, automatically accuse them of racism so that they will cower in fear and run and hide under the desk. People scapegoat other people all the time, that Hitler scape goated the Jews, Stalin Scapegoated the Gypsies, Nero Scapegoated the Christians, and some Americans scape goat Mexicans, Blacks, and even whites... What that freeper said is factually correct. Slavery didn't end four hundred years ago. It started four hundred years ago and ended in 1860, segregation ending in the 1960s. It wasn't something that 'just happened'. Personally I think that in 2005 with the information superhighway and so many opportunities there's not much of an excuse for anyone failing.
Welfare is the worst thing to happen to the black man after segregation ended. The government is the black man's worst enemy IMHO from years of living around black people and knowing many.
My concern is about a thread I saw some time ago that quoted the sites of hate groups saying they were going to try and infiltrate FR. JH's post looks like classic bigot lite, that is he tried to cloak his racism in conservatism. Yet not once did he address the fact the govt is the bigger evil here, to him is the African Americans...
