This is a call to tech minded Freepers (everyone from software engineers to hobbyists) to contribute in some way to make FR better than it already is from a technical standpoint.
FR (i think) uses a from scratch proprietary system so any improvements to the system would have to first have to suggested then petitioned to JimRob to look at the code. Bandwidth and other issues could most likely addressed by updating the FR system with valid W3C code and implementing various caching tricks. THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM OF HOW FR IS RUN NOW. We all enjoy FR and do not want to change any of the things we all know and love about it. We just want to see if there are any technical areas in which we could improve speed, decrease costs, or improve all-around experience.
Ping any tech minded Freepers you may know.
First rule of programming. "If it's not broke don't fix it"
;)
Well, I've never been called "Tech minded" but I smoked PCP when I was in college. Not on purpose, right? It was mixed in with some low quality weed. Scared the hell out of me. Last time I ever bought dope off that art school b*tch.

(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
I would propose merging an SQL system with a PHP internal network running over a token ring ADL on an AS400 Sybase.
Did you think you were Superman?
Not saying it's broke... just that if it's good enough for liberal community sites to use the latest standards it should be good enough for us. It would make running FR cheaper and faster.
Did you think you were Superman?
You know, you'd think you would, from all those Highschool drug education posters - "Smoke the Boat" "PCP, it'll make you feel like God when he's drunk and angry" stuff like that (truth be told, I never read 'em that closely, I mainly just looked at the pictures.) but it totally wasn't like that at all. I was just real scared. Like the first time I dropped acid and then I went to that Swans concert and they pulled the kid in the wheelchair up and stabbed him and all that wet catfood went shooting all over the place?

You might start by asking John Robinson if he is interested in having a bunch of folks mess around with his software.
RSS feeds... simple to implement and helps reduce bandwidth use
It would also cost less to run. JimRob creating a whole new set of software is not cost effective- there are systems available relatively cheap, which have thousands of man-hours of development into them.
I also cant understand why sites like 'salon.com' and 'moveon.org' have MILLIONS thrown at them and FR has to make do with $200K per year.
You CAN accept money and still remain independant. Unless you dont have faith in yourself to stay that way... I dont understand it.
I am a software engineer- I would love to volunteer some time.
I agree. RSS is the way to go. I have a guy in my office who can program RSS feeds, he's done the one on www.faithstreams.com (my job). Maybe I can get him to help out.
Did you clear this with anyone?
Fixed it for you. ;-)
BTW, has Jim Robinson asked anyone for this advice? Heck, I wish other forums I post on were as good as FR. Fark/TotalFark are good, but I think this interface is better.
He said decrease costs, not increase them.
Good question.
I am also available (HTML, PHP, MySQL, Apache) for any effort that materializes.
