Republicans have way to protest party's takeover by religious right
Omaha World Herald/Omaha.com ^ | 3-27-05 | Harold Andersen

the (relatively silent) majority of Americans feel(s) that the most compassionate treatment for Terri Schiavo - as well as the proper legal course of action - is to let her vegetative existence end, as advocated by her legal guardian, her husband.

For Republicans who consider their party a captive of the religious right on matters like medical research and right-to-die legislation and now legislative intrusion into the judicial system, there is a way to at least feel more comfortable with their political consciences.

That way is to leave a party whose leadership is currently attempting to leave behind in the dust of American constitutional history the principle of separation of powers that has served this country well for more than 200 years.

the religious conservatives deeply involved in the case believe in an afterlife - eternal life in circumstances considerably more appealing than lying in a hospital bed in a vegetative state for 15 years, being kept alive by food and liquids fed into your body through a hole in your abdomen.

Wouldn't the more compassionate course be to release Terri from a vegetative existence in the belief you are sending her on to a better life after death?

This was a dead letter from the first. Not even Alexander Hamilton could have crafted a cogent argument from the facts at hand.

I posted the day after Palm SUnday that this Schiavo vote was going to cost the Senate their ability to go nuclear. I said and still believe Congress overreach on the Schiavo bill indicates to the bulk of Americans that the religious right is controlled by a bunch of kooks and that most Americans are now likely to believe that the nominees appointed by Bush are extremist. I dont believe they are but it will be hard to be credible on the issue after flaking out for more than a week on Schiavo. Thanks guys. There goes your numero uno issue down the tubes. Thank you Randall Terry.

I bow to your superior legal knowledge, that's one reason I have stayed off the TS threads. However, common sense tells me that in the absence of a living will, a million dollar payoff to her ex with a family and the fact that her parents want her to live, the court should have ruled on the side of life. If for no other reason so as not to PO 1/3 of the nation. Perhaps my common sense is flawed.....

Problem is that MS has been offered more than the original insurance pay-off to just walk away and let the parents take custody. He won't. What's your theory on this rather odd behavior?

Same reason that he gives them a hard time on cremation and where her remains will be interned, payback. The Schindlers have made his life a living hell since they couldnt get their grubby fingers on Terri's malpractice award. Nothing like calling the your wife's husband a murderer, being dragged into court time, and having kooks trespassing on your home and family to endear you.

"Yep. Problem is that MS has been offered more than the original insurance pay-off to just walk away and let the parents take custody. He won't. What's your theory on this rather odd behavior? And don't say "cause Terry said she wanted to die", there were plenty of opportunities in the first 7 YEARS for that argument."

I wouldn't pretend to know, first, if that is really a fact and second, if it is a fact, why.

I don't know Michael, and have no idea how his brain functions, but I will guarantee this. He wishes he had taken a different road.

I have made many errors in this trek through life, regretted them and would hope to never make them again, but none were anything compared to this compilation of blunders.

STATE officials, including judges, have absolutely no legal power or authority to override FEDERAL directives.

I think the states rights argument was laid to rest with Brown v. Board of Education, and the passage of federal civil rights laws to supercede state Jim Crow policies.

Oh, I see. He's an ass. A silly ass. A silly ass that is to stupid to walk away for a million dollars. That makes him a stupid, silly ass that is killing his EX-WIFE (by common law marriage) because he is out for revenge. That makes him a stupid, silly, vengeful ass that doesn't have the common sense that God gave bugs, to get away from a bad situation. For some reason my contempt for the man just went higher....

It has not cost them that ability.
There are still 55 Republican Senators.
51 of them can still vote for Bush's judges.
If they choose not to, it's a choice of their own free will.

...or a lack of will, or a demonstration of cowardice, or a lack of principle. We wait to find out which.

No, Death-loving Liebruls don't care about people either.
The 'social programs' you talk about are failures run by librels.
We should do everything to make sure EVERYone has a chance to be saved and taken up. even you.
When people live no matter how they live poor or not- they can earn God's Grace.
And we don't have much time . those muder judges are robbing terry of her right to be chosen.

Conservatives get blamed for not following the polls and agreeing with Democrats. Those are you know, the natural order of things. The legacy media, the RINOs and the Democrats are rubbing their hands in glee as they sit back and watch the conservatives implode. They can barely contain their excitement at the thought they will be back before not too long running the show again.

Isn't this what the Nazis called it? A 'release'?

Vegetative? Its one of those things the PETA vegans would support. VEGETABLES HAVE NO RIGHTS! A principle that particularly applies to people who resemble one. After all, they have even less stature than mere animals and don't deserve the protection accorded to mere beasts.
