Rev. Jesse Jackson said Tuesday afternoon that he has persuaded two Florida state senators to change their votes on a bill to save Terri Schiavo, leaving the measure just one vote shy of the majority necessary for passage.
"Two of them have committed to meeting with Gov. Jeb Bush. They say that they're flexible if they can find acceptable emergency language," Jackson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity.
Targeting members of the state senate's black caucus in a bid to save Schiavo, Jackson explained: "While we didn't have the specific language today, if I could just get them to shift their will to do whatever [we can] within the law to help her live, that would be a victory."
"They've made that commitment," the civil rights leader added. "I hope it turns into something concrete, signed by morningtime."
Asked if he thought he'd convert the additional vote that would guarantee passage, Jackson said: "If we get two - with the help of Gov. Jeb Bush, we can get three. . . If I was able to persuade two - if he could persuade one, we can change that vote."
The top Democrat said he had contacted the governor's office and was awaiting a return call, saying, "I hope that he will call me and I hope to share with him my position."
Jackson said he would return to Florida tomorrow if he determines it is "the best, most effective way" to save Schiavo.
"I will fly to Tallahassee or Washington or anyplace," he said.
I can't think when I've agreed with anything Jesse Jackson has done until now. I hope he can help Terri, and that it isn't too late for her to recover from her maltreatment.
Amen! My prayers have changed back from "please comfort Terri and her family" to "Please, Lord, let her hang on until enough people come to their senses and let this innocent woman live!"
I think the problem is that if everybody shows up, 21 votes are required...
Less than an hour ago on Hannity's radio show Randall Terry said her kidneys were still functioning. (I'm honestly not sure how he knows.)
It does seem like he is grandstanding, knowing it's too late. Now he can say "hey I tried"
I'm not condemning him, I'm asking him to put up or shut up. If he truly can change two votes, then we win. You don't need three, just two - so let's see them.
...Oh and did I forget the Evangelicals?
As far as I am concerned, Jesse is MORE THAN WELCOME to help save Terri!
I don't think so. It's a simple majority of the quorum. Otherwise, why would they be requesting that some just walk off the floor?
Uh, hello? Who do you think pays for them now?
They are hoping one walks off the floor without voting. A woman congress critter was supposed to do just that last time. But she got ticked off at some women praying outside of her office, so she voted no. Sounds like she's a real pushover...hopefully JJ got to her.
Yes, The Lord does move in mysterious ways however, I don't think Jackson is working for the Lord.
He only works for himself.
And Jessie Jackson saves the day?
LOL!
It's too late for Terri. WHERE was he earlier?
On CNN, he talked about seizing the moment to seek justice with mercy.
If a few Republicans in power had that kind of resolve, we wouldn't be in this situation of standing idly by as a woman mercilessly dies.
I'm saying that at this point they all *will* be present. We can't count on someone walking, so we need 21 votes..
The legislature goes back in session tomorrow. I don't think anybody expected Terri to be alive. She's fighting to live! I don't care who helps her. Rick Santorum is flying in tonight. Whatever it takes!
It doesn't matter. God works in mysterious ways. V's wife.
