Yes, a aftershock from the 9.0 quake per USGS.

An Easter-time aftershock after a Christmas day earthquake. Very strange, indeed.

"But there could be a tsunami in another area, do you think?"

YES

WARNING... THIS EARTHQUAKE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A WIDELY
DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI IN THE OCEAN OR SEAS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE.
AUTHORITIES IN THOSE REGIONS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY
AND TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION. THIS ACTION SHOULD INCLUDE EVACUATION
OF COASTS WITHIN A THOUSAND KILOMETERS OF THE EPICENTER AND CLOSE
MONITORING TO DETERMINE THE NEED FOR EVACUATION FURTHER AWAY.

If there was one my point is that it would have hit Sumatra already...

Any word from Sumatra?

Actually, don't those occur on the 21-22 of March and December?

Phuket has been pretty well cleaned up since the tsunami, most everthing is up and running, (not Molly Malone's though), with the time of day, and the warning procedures, they should be OK.

As for Indonesia, its anyone's guess, messed up country.

Do you know how soon after the December event the Tsunami appeared?

If I remember correctly, it took two hours.

Lons as you don't mind being called a "wackjob"???? : ) But, if that were the case, should we look for the Tsunami to hit, oh I don't know 3500 miles from where the earthquake actually happened.... FLORIDA!! (DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN sound effect)

It would also depend on the type of slip that occurs. If one side of the fault uplifted or dropped by any significant measure the danger of tsunami might be greater. If it was a lateral slip the danger is usually less.

Being close to the surface means the energy is more directly transfered to the water. Then again there are a lot of unknowns in the area of tsunami sciences. I tend to agree with who ever said the waves would have already reached Sumatra.

I've read a lot about Midway. Shows how much intelligence gathering matters.

Representatives from 52 countries attend at a meeting of environment ministers and experts in Seoul, Monday, March 28, 2005. The creation of an Asia-wide early warning system for tsunamis must be accompanied by teaching campaigns to inform the public how to respond to the many natural disasters that ravage the region, environment officials said Monday at a U.N.-sponsored conference.
