Dow Jones News Reports at 11:39 "DJ Singapore Official: 7.5 Quake Hits Sumatra - Kyodo"
No other reports yet.
Classified as a "shallow event," which could be conducive to tsunami. On Fox.
The good news is that it happened at about 11 PM there, so hopefully there were far less people at the beach.
aftershock of what??The earthquake in December??
The last time they kept raising the size of the quake. It started as an 8-8.5 and ended up a 9+.
I doubt very highly we'll get as much video of this one if in fact they have any type of tsunami comparable to the last... People will be going for high ground, BIGTIME!!! They didn't realize the effects last time, which is probably why we saw alot of the "Hey, look how big that waves is..." type comments before all of the devastation took place...
Prayers are being sent...
It sounds like it was Shallow too, that isn't good. About 20 miles below the surface of the earth according to FOX.
NEIC is generally more reliable than the PTWC for magnitudes (simply because PTWC is faster.)
They are calling it a shallow quake... less than 20 miles below the ocean floor. Slightly farther off the coast than the 9.0 quake, about 260 miles from Banda Aceh.
This doesn't look good.
Tsunami would have already hit Sumatra if there was one.
Thanks for the correction. I just remember watching the December quack on FR. I was yelling at the computer - send out a tsunami warning. Prayers sent for the area, again.
Yes, they did.
But it seems like they are all over this one.
fyi
Day after Christmas, now day after Easter. Strange. Prayers for all in that area.
Yes, a aftershock from the 9.0 quake per USGS.
It's unfortunate that the area affected in Dec and again today has no gauges to measure sea level.
It may or may not be an aftershock. It's possible it's a rupture of the subduction zone..off central Sumtra...south of the area that ruptured off Northern Sumatra and the Andaman Island..which did not rupture in December.
In which case it isn't an aftershock.
Sounds like a world of hurt is coming to the region, once again, H. I hope the survivors learned what to do, from December's tsunami.
Pulau is Indonesian for "island." Thus, there would be another part of the name such as Pulau Besar for "Big Island."
