Injury Report Prompted Schiavo Cremation Plans

Michael Schiavo decided to have his wife's body cremated after her parents' lawyers obtained medical records showing she had sustained broken bones, a nurse who cared for Terri Schiavo is now claiming.

"He wanted her cremated after the bone fractures and dislocations were found," nurse Carla Sauer Iyer, who cared for Terri in the mid-1990s while she was at the Palm Gardens Convalescent Center, told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity on Friday.

"He immediately went to court and [said he] wanted her body cremated at that time," she said, "after we got hold of the records that proved there were dislocations and fractures."

A 1991 report on a bone scan performed on Terri Schiavo states:

"There are an extensive number of focal abnormal areas ... These include: multiple bilateral ribs ... both sacroiliac joints ... both knees and both ankles."

Radiographs reveal "compression fractures" of the spine and right femur. ... "Compression fracture presumably traumatic," the report says.

Nurse Iyer said she recently contacted Palm Gardens to encourage co-workers who also cared for Terri to speak out - but said they have been muzzled.

"The administrator had gotten them together and they talked about what happened with Michael," Iyer told Hannity. "The people who have worked with Terri who are still there, they cannot talk to reporters - they would be terminated."

Small correction to my last post:

Of course, the people not being fed as part of 'end of life protocol' apparently wish it for themselves, or have Living Wills specifing it.

But it's still wrong, IMHO to starve people to death, just because they have a terminal disease or some other reason.

We're not far from the Netherland's policies on this at this point.

BTW, I'm a huge Terri supporter and keep pointing out to people that the only reason she was on a feeding tube in the first place was that her husband got a court order that she be fed this way (presumably so that he could get her to the point she's at now),

I'm sure the doctors who had to pay a lot of money because the courts found it was their incompetence that resulted in Terri's condition would love to use this evidence. --------------- I wonder why they or their insurance companies have not? It was apparently available before the malpractice trial.

That is a very good question. We have been discussing that on the 'Quinn in the Morning' radio show in Pittsburgh for days now.

One would think the doctor and insurance company would have salivated over what has been reportedly found. I don't know the answer to that, but I have a guess (but no one wants suppositions here).

Here's another question that seems puzzling. Do you find the money M.S. received from the malpractise suit was somewhat low. I think there is something in that "somewhat low" figure settlement.

That tape of Terri most people have seen is culled from about 4 hours of tape where most of the time Terri is non responsive. About 80% of what is being reported are absolute lies or propaganda.

The four hours of tape are culled from 24 hours, too. Who says those four hours are typical?????????

I magine that sleep deprivation would really cut into the ability-to-respond of someone who is brain injured.

BTW. I have been following the story for several years, too, though I don't live in Florida.

Excellent point Amelia. I imagine the doctors who were found liable for Terri's condition do not want their reputations sullied any further by becoming involved at this point. Their malpractice insurance carrier probably represented them in court, paid the settlement/award, and they consider themselves to be through with the situation.

I have been in a similar situation. My business was sued (frivolously in my opinion) for an unfathomable amount of money and my insurance carrier represented me. After spending about $10,000 on depositions and expert opinions on my behalf, it was determined that the plaintiff didn't have a case. The insurance company suggested that we offer $5000 just to be done with the problem. I stated I wanted to be exonerated - not settle. They did not want to spend additional monies on attorney fees for a full blown trial and basically demanded I settle. I asked that the offer be reduced to $2500, they agreed, and the plaintiff accepted it. I wouldn't want the entire ordeal brought up on national news at this point. Just being associated with scandal is damaging enough to one's reputation.

It is common for malpractice insurers to settle a case rather than fighting it. Pure economics.

In fact, I'm sure they threaten any doctor who insists on fighting to clear his name and reputation that, even if the case is won, he can expect to have his malpractice insurance dropped.

We all know how gullible juries are in malpractice suits. because of the use of emotion rather than reason to decide such cases. That's how snake oil salesmen (aka malpractice attorneys) like the blinky Breck Girl (ex-Senator John Edwards) make millions, channeling the voices of brain dead babies. Too bad he didnt step forward and offer to channel the voice of Terri Schaivo

I have read that the doctors wanted to appeal the jury's finding in Michael Schaivo's case. However, a settlement was reached instead. Most time such settlements also result in an order to seal the records. Time will tell.

In Terri Schiavo's case, 1.4 million was really a pretty small settlement in the case of a brain damaged patient - who had a LIFE EXPECTANCY OF ANOTHER 50 YEARS. Guess those compassionate jurors had no way of knowing that their verdict set into motion MS's plan to kill Terri off, not to rehabilitate her (a statement which is a matter of chronological record)

The old media is the most evil and destructive force in this country.

The spokesman for the Media Research Center was on Fox this morning. Made the point that the nationwide polls that show 50 to 70+% support for discontinuing life support are based on questions that are misleading (i.e. she is in a persistent vegetative state) and further influenced by the old media's not correcting this statement, but to the contrary, repeating it over and over in their press, radio and TV reporting.
