Rabbis Plead for Bush to Intervene

Rabbi Yehuda Levin has issued the following statement on behalf of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada:

"We urge President George Bush and Florida Governor Jeb Bush to take immediate, decisive action to save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo. We appreciate the pro-life statements of President Bush and Governor Bush. Yet, their efforts have thus far not been successful. We therefore urge the President and Governor Bush to take immediate and decisive action - either jointly or separately - to save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo before it is too late.

"When evil becomes 'legally' sanctioned by government, it rises to a higher order of evil - that of Sodom. Legality does not dictate morality. The Almighty dictates morality.

"America is being tested. Will we pass or will we fail?

"Perhaps some feel that everything that could be done has been done. But our holy Torah, the Word of G-d, says otherwise: 'Am I my brother's keeper?' We all know the answer."

Jeb Bush swore an oath to uphold the Florida Constitution which states the following:

ARTICLE I
Section 2
Basic rights.--All natural persons, female and male alike, are equal before the law and have inalienable rights, among which are the right to enjoy and defend life and liberty, to pursue happiness, to be rewarded for industry, and to acquire, possess and protect property; except that the ownership, inheritance, disposition and possession of real property by aliens ineligible for citizenship may be regulated or prohibited by law. No person shall be deprived of any right because of race, religion, national origin, or physical disability.

ARTICLE IV
Section 1
(a) The supreme executive power shall be vested in a governor, who shall be commander-in-chief of all military forces of the state not in active service of the United States. The governor shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, commission all officers of the state and counties, and transact all necessary business with the officers of government. The governor may require information in writing from all executive or administrative state, county or municipal officers upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices. The governor shall be the chief administrative officer of the state responsible for the planning and budgeting for the state.
(b) The governor may initiate judicial proceedings in the name of the state against any executive or administrative state, county or municipal officer to enforce compliance with any duty or restrain any unauthorized act.
(d) The governor shall have power to call out the militia to preserve the public peace, execute the laws of the state, suppress insurrection, or repel invasion.

I agree that George W. Bush has no legal grounds for action here (although Congress certainly could take action to enforce a lawful subpeona that Greer ignored). However, Jeb Bush is clearly within his powers to take custody of Terri Schiavo.

We're already in a constitutional crisis.

"In this situation on a personal and moral level, I go with the parents who are willing to take care of this young woman," former White House Counsel Lanny Davis told Fox News Channel's Geraldo Rivera. "And I cannot comprehend why this husband is standing in their way."

Actually seems only (GOP) government thinks this is OK,.

Oh so your argument is "Lets throw some gas and a few bombs into the fire and see how many innocent people we can get killed in the process"!

Right?

Do you people work for or get paid by the DNC because you are doing yeoman's work for them!

There is no law honored by G-d which allows this murder to occur. The "Law" of Sodom is said to have allowed such murder of innocents -- the law of Sodom demanded it, like Greer has demanded Terri's death -- and look what happed to Sodom.

Legality does not dictate morality. The Almighty dictates morality.

Good job, rabbis: A command from the Almighty God is superior to a command from our human representatives. Fortunately, the US representatives are conguent with the Almighty 51% of the time or more. But allowing Terri to starve is incongruent with the Almighty, since God asks us to "defend human life from conception to its natural end" (Pope John Paul ii, Ecclesia de eucharistia, no. 20), Thus, the rabbis are correct to ask the Bush Brothers to fix the problem.

I pray for Terri, for her family, for her supporters, (and for her enemies - which is tough).

Are you really going to compare kidnapping a little boy at gunpoint, and giving him to a dictator, to saving an innocent woman's life?

Umm, yeah. The basic act is still the same--saving someone's life--whether it be from starvation or living under a horrid regime. A life is destroyed either way. We cannot stoop to Janet Reno, jack-boot thug level. the "Nazis" are the ones killing Terri. Neither the President, nor Governor Bush, should break the law.

Yes...what would happen if the troopers Jeb sent in were stopped by the police who are guarding Terri.

Both groups are armed.

Of course at various times in history, legality has often been substituted for moral judgment. There's a sense that we've now crossed a Rubicon in America.

What happens when Federal Marshall's or state troopers or national guardsman's face off with the sheriffs guarding the hospice?

Should they open fire on them when they refuse to put down their weapons?

YES and YES. Evil is evil no matter that it is done under color of law. Our grandfathers spill the blood of hudrends of thousands to prevent this kind of crap. ALL their sacrifice and blood was spilled for nothing if we do this.

That's asking a lot from an Empty-Suit Girlieman like Jeb.

I think this whole thing has been a travesty and a miscarriage of justice, but I agree with you that nothing more can be done.

At this point, many more innocent people would have to die in order to save her, and it's probably too late anyway. After this long with out food or water, she will TRULY be in need of life support, and if they won't even aloow the feeding tube to be re-inserted, what are the chances of her being put on life support?

Also, to the people who are calling for Jeb Bush's head, what would you have him do? Send in state troopers to shoot it out with a bunch of cops who are just doing their jobs, after which he would be impeached, and Terri would die anyway? Save your vitriol and channel your energy into imposing some limits on these filthy little tinpot judicial fascists. They are the real enemy here.

Genesis 4:9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

Genesis 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Genesis 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

The shedding of innocent blood is no new thing. The first child ever born was a murderer. This country is striking down Terri Shiavo, and soon her blood will be crying to God. He pronounced a curse on Cain. I wonder what is in store for those who instigated Terri's murder......and for those who could have saved her, and didn't?

which both Bushes swore on the Bible ....which contain the 10 Commandments, the Sixth of which is *THOU SHALT NOT KILL*.

Not stopping a murder, makes one as guilty as the murderer themselves, even in worldly laws!

Had the Founding Fathers obeyed the "laws" of King George and the British courts, we would all be bowing to the Queen.

Had the abolitionists mindlessly obeyed the law, slavery would still be legal.

Every thing that Adolf Hitler did was legal under German "law".

Had Martin Luther King and those who fought for civil rights for blacks obeyed the "law", racism would still be officially sanctioned.

Those who worship the "law" and mindlessly follow the edicts of it's High Priests (the courts) will deserve the depraved and inhuman society they get.

Well, in that case, aren't the people standing around outside the hospice allowing this murder to take place?
