Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

"I assume you also saw Nurse Trudy, shortly after the dumb cop.........I'll swear that Trudy was about to reveal that she and MS had a fling......"
I wondered the same. At any rate, they had some kind of closeness, enough that she went with him in his car for something. Odd that a nurse would do that with her patients' husband. At any rate, she did say that Terri responded to people and that Michael told her that he and Terri had never discussed right to die issues. Too bad Greta cut her off; I wanted to hear more.
Any move would be only symbolic now. Let's face it - she likely looks like something in a concentration camp. Her internals are probably hopelessly damaged, as if she needed any more.
It would royally tick me off if they did anything this late in the game.
Randal Terry is a showman on the same level as Bill Baird. He's great at getting others to go to jail for him. Jeb has done FAR more for this woman than little Randy has--hot air and camera hogging being Randy's hobby.
You people are freaking jokes. Good luck trying to tear down this party with your cops-are-Nazis bull. When you bitch about President Hillary being a Nazi, I will bitterly laugh at your over-the-top antics, which have nothing to do with serious political discourse.
Why are we ALWAYS outmaneuvered?
You should have been watching Hannity,he had a friend of Terri, saying that MS used to say repeatedly that he did not know what Terri would want.
Then Colmes started with his drivel and she would not let him do his talking points She said Scoot Schiavo(brother) lied. Colmes asked why, she said you should ask him.
I know it wont make a difference in the legal case but the story is getting out and her fierceness was great.
It made feel better, well at least stopped me from throwing the remote at the TV because of Colmes.
Theory: MS became a nurse to ensure his access to insulin. His MO was to debilitate rather than kill. That would trigger an autopsy. He could get $$$ from malparactice claims that he basically instigated.
Big BUMP!
since you don't know me, I can't comment much except to say I've been a Christian for 40 years....insulting me by saying I"m not just by reading one post reflects your attitude and intellectual persuasion.....you mean that all cops must be Christian........not jewish or any other faith....????......if they get an illegal order then of course they can refuse....otherwise they are bound to uphold the law....and many scholars have pontificated on the fact that we must follow the laws of the nation or change them....or of course follow the consequences....
Just like Bill Clinton with Elian Gonsalez. And we all LOVED it when Clinton did that!
I am afraid the backlash will swamp the GOP too. To bad cause their are good Republicans in Congress.
It is not credible that a country judge, that Jeb could remove from office in a heartbeat can thwart the President of the USA and the governor of Fla, not credible at all.
I just got one of Frist's puking "I'm running for President" Congressional update emails. In it he said about Terri's true medical condition (quote) "It looks like we will never know.) Spineless heartless doctors comes right out and says they are not going to act. Cowards and they are fools.
Then if the courts say that your wife shoud die, whether she's truly brain dead or not, we'll just conveniently let them have her. Right? Nice thinkin there...
Murder is murder, no matter how many government officials sign on to it.
Is murder right or wrong? Perhaps that's a constituional question you can grasp.
that of cours is a personal decision you would have to make......and I would admire you for it, for following your convictions......
"I seriously do not believe that the Sheriffs would have shot the State Police for trying to rescue Terri..this is bunk."
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
I do not disrespect the courage of the LEO's down there, but each one of them knows that they would not shoot a brother LEO for what is, in truth, an attempt to save a woman's life. They may have strutted and made a show, but if arms were presented they would have stepped aside. Can anyone imagine killing a fellow cop or being killed by a fellow cop because some slimebag lawyer and a rotten judge said you should? Uh-uh. No way.
Interesting, the Gov. of the state of Florida (forget that he's the brother of our President) saved Terri once, by law. He has worked very hard to try to save her again.
You are condoning a potential bloodbath, since the cops there there have been ordered to stop by force and violence anyone trying to intercede, including the Gov. of Florida in conjuction with the DCFS .
I defy you to name two more powerful elected officials who have tried harder to keep Terri alive than Pres. Bush and Gov. Bush.
Put the blame where it is deserved, with Greer, Terri's so called "husband" and his co-horts in crime death squad. To put the blame on Gov. Bush is anti-American and disgusting.
Still praying hard for Terri and her Mom, Dad, and siblings.
The police don't like the sheriffs department sticking their nose into their jurisdiction, the sheriffs department don't like the state police sticking their nose into their business, and they all hate it when the FBI comes along. It's one thing when they are invited in, they can all play well together, but in a jurisdictional fight they are like a bunch of male dogs protecting their territory. Just the way it is.
More of the perpetually dissatisfied, "if I were (title of government official) of the (state/country), I would have done THIS!" stuff going on over here.
Democrats are going to run everything soon. That's what they want.
The Elian Gonzales case was still before the courts, when Rhino sent in the stormtroopers. She was not saving a life. Elian wasn't hours from death. His case could have been discussed at length without fatal harm.
What is it with these brain dead comparisons.
