COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT REFORM TOM DAVIS, CHAIRMAN MEDIA ADVISORY March 23, 2005
For Immediate Release Contact: David Marin / Robert White (202) 225-5074
Washington, Mar 23 - The Government Reform Committee's scheduled hearing for this Friday in Pinellas County, Florida, has been temporarily postponed.
The Committee made this decision in light of recent legal events in the state and federal courts. This morning, the Florida Second District Court of Appeal issued an order denying the Committee's petition for emergency injunctive relief required to preserve a meaningful appeal and denying the Suggestion for Certification to the Florida Supreme Court. The court's order was not accompanied by any opinion.
Due to this order, and the 11th Circuit's affirmance early this morning of the district court's denial of the Schindlers' motion for temporary restraining order, the Committee has decided not to proceed with its planned field hearing at the Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida, this Friday.
However, Chairman Davis does intend to pursue the Committee's inquiry and hearing into the long-term health care options available to incapacitated adults. Clearly, the Terry Schiavo case, regardless of its outcome, has raised myriad issues that demand additional attention, and the Committee will proceed at a later date to help further this important dialogue. ###
